UPDATED: Totally OT but very important:Takata Airbags

UPDATE May 19, 2015
BREAKING on CNN:

Airbag maker Takata announces largest auto recall ever

http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/19/news/companies/takata-recall/index.html

"Rosekind could not even definitively say whether the airbags being installed in the recall cars are safe."

" Toyota has said that it plans to disable defective airbags once it runs out of replacements as it repairs the 800,000 cars it has recalled."

"Toyota has gotten permission from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to disable the airbags"

That is how serious this problem is:

This does not apply to the MK3 Focus but many of you own more than one vehicle and you may have a car impacted by this. These airbags are very dangerous. They explode and propel shrapnel into your face.

The problem is claimed to be mainly in high humidity areas, near the coastline, hig hheat, salt air, high humidity.
Then the one person mentioned dyingis in Oklahoma...??
SO apparently the most problematic areas are high humidity etc. but tragedy can happen anywhere if the metal bits hit the wrong place. (I would think jugular mainly. or straight into esophogus?)

One possible explanation for this problem revolves around a propellant that, particularly in humid climates, could deploy the airbag unexpectedly, in some cases even sending metal shards from the airbag's casing flying through the cockpit. To date there have been some 139 injuries reported.

Well damn, looks like I have to take my Honda to the dealership. We got a letter in the mail at the beginning of the year. It didn't go into this much detail about what the problem was, but now after reading about it I'm going to have them change those airbags out.

UPDATE

Airbag company accused of cover-up

"The U.S. government is asking for a nationwide recall of vehicles equipped with exploding airbags made by Takata.

It would be an expansion of a current recall which covers eight million vehicles made by 10 different automakers. Until now the recall has been limited to vehicles located in warmer states with humid climates."
