I am so sick of this thing. I've had two software upgrades to the transmission as well as the clutch replaced. All under warranty.

I've got 90K miles on my 2012 Focus and today the check engine warning indicator light is on. I can put the car in reverse, but the gear doesn't work. There's not power in reverse. Also when I put it into drive gear, it will only go 10 MPH. Argh ! I guess I'll have to get it towed to my local Ford Dealer and have them tell me 'This is normal'. The car will be 3 yrs old on Feb 19, 2015 and I still owe $10K on my car loan. I'm so ready to go ballistic !

Anyway, I'll see what the stealership says and keep everybody updated. If Ford doesn't take care of this, I'll be joining the Class action suit against them or filing a legal claim myself. I'll keep everybody posted, but until then, FU** Ford....I'll pay for an import next time.

Sounds like the transmission controller (TCM) is going out, a known problem with 2012. The problem is intermittent, so you may want to record the symptoms when it happens, so you don't get an "all is normal," from the dealer.

Yes definitely the tcm. I work at ford and have replaced many of these for this concern as well as no start concerns. Hopefully they can get it fixed for you

$10k owed and 90k on the odometer? Ouch. Let us know how that class action suit goes; I may be interested. My '99 Escort Wagon has 107k on it and I'd like to sue Ford too.

I just got a call my Ted Britt Ford in Upper Marlboro Maryland. Good news. Ford is covering the cost of the ecm / pcm module. Good job Ford. It would have cost me $1200 if the didn't. Evidently it's a known problem with these cars and Fors is trying to keep there customers happy. I'll pick it up later today and update you on how it's driving.

^^ the transmission is covered under warranty for 7/yrs/100k miles...it is a known problem for sure

^^^ that warranty extension on all the earlier cars is only for clutches, seals & programming. The OP's was also out of the 80k Emissions coverage that would have covered the TCM since he was at 90k.

Consider it good that they covered it as a "customer satisfaction" item (bonus coverage to an individual).

I feel ya. I was in the same boat last year.

The exact numbers don't matter too much... the bottom line is that my trade-in offer was $4,000 less than I owed.

So I borrowed money from my 401K to dump that horrible Focus, and I am very happy that I did.

The Subaru I picked up last Valentine's day now has 26,000 miles on it, and has required no return visits to the dealership for anything (except to replace a tire and wheel bearings damaged by a road hazard).

The ride is better (though the suspension is noisier), AWD is awesome, mileage is decent, and visibility is far and away better than in the Focus with is high beltline. The CVT is smooth as butter and an absolute pleasure to drive.

Once again my advice to anyone frustrated with their Focus and Ford's ongoing refusal or inability to make it right, is to do whatever you have to do to get rid of it. Sell stocks, cash in bonds, beg, borrow, or steal... once your Focus is gone, you'll realize that it was worth the effort.

I did the same thing and havent looked back. You cant put money on a safe reliable car. If you dont feel safe in it, or dread driving it everyday its time to switch.
