But removing the housing is no big deal on first-gen Foci. Make sure you check that there are no cracked or crumbling plastic bits inside (a known problem), and clean both the edges of the housing and the mating surface for a good seal.

I'd buy a new housing anyways, They are fairly inexpensive, and if yours is original you'll find that you'll most likely be needing one once you get it apart. If you buy a motorcraft housing (which you should) it doesn't include a new o-ring which you'll also want to replace.

FWIW, I replaced the housing on my '03 ZX5 with 350k kms with the original housing from my '01 ZX3 parts car with 394k kms.

Now at 480k kms, it's still running fine with no leaks. Must have been a good day on the parts production line...

Yes I was able to change the thermostat today without removing the whole housing. Just removed the front part that the thermostat is actually in took like 20 min.
