Hey guys hope someone can help! I've got a 04 svt with 75K. completely stock. Today the car went in forth fine but would not come out. Clutch works fine. I had the car taken to my mechanic hoping is was the linkage but he pulled the boot and they are fine he said it was something enternal. It has never given any problem and has never made any noise. He is going to pull the trans next week. Has anyone had this happen? is there something else to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Unfortunately we need a little more information.

You say the clutch is working fine but if you can't get it out of 4th how do you know?

Is it really stuck in gear or with the car off can you get it out of gear. Sometimes you have to roll the car a little to loosen up the gears with it off of course...

I would check out the master cylinder before tearing into the whole transmission. Sometimes they can go out and you can't shift into or out of gears because the clutch doesn't have any pressure. I haven't replaced one on my SVT but my Ranger's was cake and only cost 60 bucks. It also didn't require dropping the transmission which can get expensive really quick.

How long have you been going to this mechanic?

First thanks for replying! Ok, I've known the mechanic for years and trust him and his ability completly. What I meant with the clutch is that it disengages fine. I tried getting it out of gear with car running and shut off with clutch in and out. It has been rolled around alot as I had to have it hauled to the mechanics garage. He hasn't got up under it yet he just said he had pulled the boot up and checked the cables and that they were not the problem. The problem seemed to be coming from inside the transmission.
He didn't think it was the gears but something in the linkage on the inside. He's not going to get it on the rack until wedsday. I was just trying to find out if anyone else out there had anything like this happen. Thanks again!

That sounds good. I'm curious, did you buy the car new and do you know if the clutch/flywheel TSB was performed?

With yours being an 04 this is not a common problem because they had most of the kinks worked out by then although knock on wood I haven't had many problems with my 02.

Without being in front of your car it is kind of hard to diagnose.

Nope didn't buy new only about a month ago for my wife. Don't know anything about whats been done besides the fact that everything looks stock. It's really in great condition and the clutch and trans. up until today worked fine with no noise or anything. Clutch catches where it should with no problems. and when it wouldn't come out of 4th there was no sounds of trouble whatsoever. The only thing i've fixed with the car was the bottoming out sound from the passenger front that I found the answer for on this site. (Sway bar had slid over causing bolt to hit frame, reset it back over and that fixed that completley) So I'm totally puzzed by this transmission especially with only 75K on it. I had a 91 escort GT with over 200K and never had a trans problem. This has me very worried about the dependabilty of this car?

rtodd, I believe your shift cables came apart at the bracket. there is a screw in connector one cable is black one is white and they came apart. this has happened to my car and is able to ve fixed from underneath the car. I'll try to find the pics from another thread, but I think your tranny is fine.

Hey guys just wanted to say thanks for all of the help! It was the cables I went ahead and had new ones put on. Now I just need to replace the motor mount that everybody talks about. Where can I get this from?

The cheap option is the get a stock one with inserts from Mike at Hilbish Ford, theres also a site www.C-F-M.com with lots of goodies, and the buy-sell-trade forum on here can be a good source for a deal.
