So I just picked up this SVT and initially it had a cylinder 4 misfire code and the vct advanced code. I tried the loosen and slightly adjust the intake cam thing and cleared the codes. I let it sit and idle for like 30 minutes while I was doing other things then took it for a test drive and it felt great!

The next morning I jumped in to head to work and it's way worse than it was before. Give it much throttle and it studders real bad and pops. Drove it to work and it seemed not quite as bad once warm but still doing it. On the way home I stopped to pick my wife up where it sat and idled for several minutes where I noticed the temp gauge went almost to the red. I shut it off for a few minutes. When we left it all of a sudden ran great again!

It seems like when ever you let it get real hot it clears up. And when it's missing real bad if you keep it under about 1/4 throttle it runs smooth. But as soon as you tip into it a little more it starts missing and studdering again. What would cause this?

Oddly enough I just bought another '04 ZX5 that seems to be acting similar. Ugh!

Coil pack or wires. I had both (at different times).

Coil pack - I experianced lack of power above 4k RPM and kept getting worse where i was unable to even sustain freeway speeds.

Wire - I could rev it fine but under load it would fall on its face.

Have not had the over heating issues you are saying you are having. Could be related to the engine not running or another issue.

The svt had cracked insulation on the coil wires so I replaced the pigtail. The ZX5 looks like it had similar issues and a po removed the connector and stuck the wires on the pins.

Is there any way to specifically test these coils? I hate just throwing parts at something without testing and verifying is a bad part. Are there any aftermarket coils that are any good and add any performance?

I have a feeling the water pump is going out on the SVT. It doesn't have any heat coming out of the heater unless you're at higher rpm. It's just interesting that it runs so much better when you let it get good and hot.

No, Ford did really well with the ignition. I have yet to see anyone gain performance with a different pack. The Screamin Demon coil pack or the MSD are I think the only options other than OEM. But the Screamin Demon coil pack can fail also (that's the one that failed on mine and went to OEM for the last 10 years on that car and still runs).

Most commonly they fail due to torquing them down to tight and putting stress cracks in the ears that spread out and let water in.

There is a guy who posted on here a few weeks ago about measuring the resistance from coil point. 1&3 and 2& 4 share a primary widening (IIRC) and he measured and found one had muc higher resistance.

Sticky thermostat? Low on coolant or don't have the right PSI on the cap?

Coolant is full. I guess it could be a sticky thermostat that the higher pressure from higher rpm pushed it through. But the heater core is on the engine side of the t stat so not sure. Not knowing when the timing belt was last done I'm thinking of just doing it and the water pump at the same time. Might as well throw a t stat in there while I'm at it.

Usually on 4 cylinders it's 1&4 and 2&3 together. Are 1&3 and 2&4 at TDC at the same time on these engines?

Looks like your right on the 1&4 and 2&3.
