... with the car stopped.
And that's after replacing driver's side motor mount, torque mount, new axles, new suspension, and new moog endlinks. WTF.
Could it be that other mount i haven't replaced? anything i've missed?

Possibility that its something in the steering gear box? I'm not that smart when it comes to that, but that would be my guess.

Take the front wheels off the car while its on jackstands and crank the wheels to the left and right. Check both positions for any kind of rubbing. I suspect the swaybar is rubbing on something. Either the axle or the steering arm. (i forget which passes under the hump in the swaybar... lol. Its one of the two)

I have been having the same problem in our GTI. The dealer thinks that they frame needs to be adjusted. I have brought it in 6-7 times for the problem.

Just throwing this out there.... Check to see if the airbox is hitting anything.

swaybar endlinks?

they need to be tightened when the suspension is compressed.
I'll check that too. I have new Moog endlinks, but i might have tightened them with the car on stands.

they are really hard to get to when on the ground, you might have to put it on stands and jack up under the balljoint.

yeah, that's what i'll do. I can't imagine getting at it with a wheel on.
i've been doing some reading.. what exactly are the bushings that bind up when you tighten up the endlinks without the suspension compressed?

Also, I forgot to mention, my car seems to be wandering when on the road and I think it might have to do with the same issue as the clunking noise, because they started at the same time.

ok, so i tightened the endlinks with the suspension compressed and noticed that the rubber where the tie rod connects to the knuckle is broken. could that have anything to do with it?

I test drove it and it's still clanking away. Also it feels like there is something lose in the suspension, even though i checked everything and bolted everything down. When rolling slowly it feels like it's "limping" and when going quick it wanders.

check the inner side of the front wheels, if u see a black on the rims from the inside, then its the axle, its pretty common with svts, i just had mine replaced for $175... when the oil finally runs out, it starts to make that noise when u try to turn... good luck

It could be the tie rod. You can check to see if its lose by just jacking the car up and with the wheel locked trying to move it.

I would have it replaced. Mine had the SAME thing wrong.. I never could find it until i took it to a mechanic and he did what I told you to do and sure enough there was some movement. Once I changed it, it was fixed.
