Stereo issues -LOUD popping, crackling, white noise ---HELP!!!

Buyer's remorse or blue oval blues. My stereo has decided to terrorize me with LOUD popping, crackling, and white noise. In the beginning, my stereo would make a loud pop and then not emit any sound. The display would work, and I could change the stations, inputs, and volume, but no noise would come out of the speakers. I would simply turn the car off and back on and the problem would be resolved. Since then, this gremlin has transformed into a creature from a "Predator" movie. Now when I start my car, the music may play for a couple of seconds and then the loud popping takes over. Whether the volume is on "1" or "10" the noise is just as loud and startling. I would simply turn off the power to the stereo, but this did not seem to alleviate anything. Although not as consistent, the noise seems to intermittently come even if the car is turned off and the key is NOT in the ignition.
As stated, this noise is very loud and startling. It startled me enough that I accidentally jerked the wheel out of reflex while driving down the highway yesterday. Music is a luxury, but having the crap scared out of you by your own car while driving is a GIANT SAFETY ISSUE!!

A little back history on this vehicle: I bought it brand new from a Ford dealer. My last vehicle (Toyota) was completely unreliable and I was excited to have a new, dependable, car with good fuel economy that would bring me peace of mind. Unfortunately, this radio issue is not its only defect. Like many others, I too have been dealing with the transmission issues of it shuttering, grinding, losing power, and killing my MPG.

Is there any hope in Ford rectifying my issues or should this lemon be returned to the farm?[:(] Unfortunately, my warranty has expired as I am now at 40,000 miles. One dealer wants $80 just to diagnose the radio issue, while the other wants $120 to do the same. Both stated that the transmission parts are on back order so they can't do anything about it for a while. I have read other threads from people with this radio issue and am wondering if Ford is acknowledging this issue or simply trying to sweep it under the rug and let their loyal customers' wallets take the heat for their shortcomings.

I don't hate Ford, my other Ford vehicles were awesome. But this one has made me lose a lot of hope in their brand and the overall quality of American auto manufacturers' products.

So far my focus has been a good car. I think it had clutch packs at about 13,000-16,000. Radio was replaced, tcm replaced at 97k. But I’ve now got almost 140k on the car. Mostly interstate miles. It’s doing good with that. I average 36.2-36.4 mpg. Lately it’s been 36.4 or so.

Coming up for trans fluid change at 150 like manual says, have been running mostly high mileage oil since 70-75k and it seems to like that. Still barely uses oil. Been a good car really. May trade it in or sell early next year to get an suv. But the radio is finally occasionally acting up again. For example when I first contact the phone the radio will sometimes lock up. Usually turning the radio off and back on will solve it.

if we decide to keep it long term and the radio acts up more, I would install an aftermarket in it. But the radio on these cars they probably should have recalled.

I have the same alien living in my speakers and YES... it is a serious safety issue! Random loud popping and white noise should not startle the driver. I hope Ford acknowledges this is indeed a safety issue!
Thanks for reaching out, freemind!

Hi JWhite09,

I got your message and I've responded with what info I'll need. :)

Could you please tell me the solution?
We are having the same issue with our Ford Focus 2013. This is definitely a safety issue since its very startling when the very loud popping and static starts. And it happens even when the radio is off. How can we fix it? Is it a fuse issue? What is Ford doing to fix this.

They stopped selling them. :ROFLMAO:

Ford is doing nothing to fix it. You have to buy a new radio for your car. A replacement for mine was 250 bucks! Once the new radio was in, its worked fine and Ive had no issues.
I had this exact issue with the loud crackling, and then eventually the stereo stopped working at all. This fix worked for me!

ANSWERED: Why has the radio stopped working and my speakers are making loud rand... (Ford Focus) - CarGurus

"You take the unit out then unscrew the bottom cover , take a torch and heat up the board just enough to see solder melt around the parts . Do not hold on same place for long periods of time . Do not shake or move till it cools off or all your semiconductors well fall off then you could just trash it. Once it cools put it back in and enjoy the sounds "

Torch? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: I guess if one is a caveman and doesn't have access to a heat gun. I do believe that reflowing the solder of certain components may fix the issue. I believe this because I can always, 100% of the time, get my unit to work by bending just one corner of the circuit board for less than one second. This implies that there's either an intermittent (cracked?) component or a bad solder joint. I plan to use a heat gun to heat this corner of the board to reflow the solder in the area that shows an issue. I suspect this may fix the issue, though I am not sure for how long.

You can moch all you want - I don't have a heat gun, but I do now have a working stereo.

Others will melt components on the board or burn the board using a torch.

It's "mock" BTW.
Hope I'm doing this right. I have a 2015 focus. The loud crackling just started. Tried pulling radio fuse, but that didn't stop it. Which fuse will stop the sound?
Sometimes the oven works but you may need to replace thermal grease for heat sink.

Ok, pulled my radio and found a bad solder on board. Looks like it melted down. Going to try this, see attached.

It turns out that was the problem with my radio. For some background, mine started with the popping and crackling and I would have to restart the radio for it to work again. Then it was popping and cracking even with the car off so I removed the fuse. Then when I went to put the fuse back in and check it would not even turn on. So I did the oven bake method wrapped portion of the circuit board that I didn't want heated in foil. Baked it at 375 for about 12 minutes. Reassembled with new thermal grease on heat sinks and it's working now. However since I used the oven method it will probably be temporary.
