Two weeks ago I got a brand new 2012 Ford Focus S sedan, and now it has only 556 miles and can not start, the engine don't even turn over! The warning light "Steering Assist Fault - Service Require" come on, and the front power windows do not work. Tomorrow I'm towing the car back to the dealer to fix it. What's wrong with it?

The car already broke down at 556 miles? What a joke. I read at another website about a couple dozens complaints about the 2012 Focus breaking down. Anyway, my last car was a Hyundai Elantra and it broke down a few times too during the first 5,000 miles.

Hi theFocus,

[welcome] to the forum and CONGRATULATIONS on the Focus!

Let's work on making this the great experience you desire. Send me a PM with the VIN, current mileage, as well as you personal and dealer contact info. I will then escalate the concern to the Customer Service Manager for review. In turn, the CSM will contact you as well as your dealer to assure this ISSUE is addressed.

Thanks,

Noemi

The mechanic said there is a problem with the ignition relay so he switch it with the rear defroster relay so I can drive the car until the new part come in three weeks. Why did the ignition relay already burned out at 556 miles? Is the relay cover for 3 years/36Kmiles or the 5 years/60K miles?

It's probably a freak thing, not that it's any consolation. Let Noemi know if they aren't playing by the rules- like charging you for a warranty repair or diagnosis.

2012 Focus Power Assist Failure

Family member purchased 2012 Focus SE in December, electric power assist has failed twice since then. Dealer claims the problem is not duplicated for them and there's no fault code to read, so they returned the car without any solution. Ford Customer Care agent involved - no solution. There is a service bulletin issued on the problem, but the dealers cannot address it without the failure happening in their shop, for their mechanics. So, apparently it's acceptable to Ford to send an elderly woman out in an unsafe car. She cannot steer the car without the power assist and, because the problem is intermittent, it cannot be confirmed by the dealer. Whatever happened to being able to research and solve an automotive failure without depending upon "what the computer says?" The car is only 2 months old and has less than 1,000 miles on it. Dealer was going to research further and never did...I did the research, but it's meaningless to them and to Ford because it's not failing in front of their eyes...they're following protocol. I wonder what their protocol will be when drivers begin losing control of these cars because they can't steer them?

Well, at least you have a diagnosis, which is better than some are able to do. Unfortunately, even if parts are 99.999% reliable, when you buy them by the million there will be a few failures. I'd bet this was just bad luck and once fixed it won't trouble you again. Electric things seem to either fail early or have a good long life.

Morning theFocus,

Glad to learn the dealership is making progress with the Focus. Continue working with them and let me know if you need assistance.

The ignition relay is covered under the 3 year/ 36000 mile bumper to bumper Warranty.

I.... Let Noemi know if they aren't playing by the rules- like charging you for a warranty repair or diagnosis.

Hello All,
Ford Customer Service directed my family member's Focus steering problem to Ford Tech Assistance. The dealer was cooperative, but not happy that they were getting direction from Ford without requesting it themselves. However, thanks to Tech and the service manager's cooperation, it was determined that the loss of power assist is related to wiring in the steering column, which is either not insulated or improperly insulated. The wiring chafes, causes a short in the system and, without input, the computer shuts down the power assist. The repair, under warranty, occurred about 3 weeks ago and the car has been fine since. The dealer, roadside assistance, national customer service, regional customer service, the tech team and at least two different mechanics - and nearly 6 weeks of intermittent problems - later .... problem fixed. Hopefully, this info will help others get theirs fixed once and for all, too.

Another comment to add - If your dealer is searching for TSBs or other info based on the VIN, forget it. Apparently there is a low enough number of vehicles still affected by this wiring issue in the general population that the VIN check is a hit-and-miss thing. If the car doesn't "fault" for the dealer, they're not able to just start hunting for the problem as in the days of old. I would highly recommend to anyone, especially when there is such a major safety concern involved such as steering loss, to specifically request that Ford Customer Service immediately involve the Tech Team. Thanks!

Hey Pastor T!

How are you?! Sounds as though everything has turned out great!

Thanks so much for the recommendation. It's my pleasure to help as best as I can. Take care and let me know if I can assist in the future.

Thanks,

Noemi

A big thank-you goes to Angela Trettenero, Customer Service Manager, Ford Motor Company, for making this all happen between Tech and the dealer. A true professional!

same issue

This may be a little late but i have had the same issue. got the brand 2012 focus sel and the steering assist fault happened after only a couple months of ownership. What a joke.. Too boot, i was in Massachusetts, a couple hundred miles from home. The only saving grace was i was at a gas station. I was able to make it back home (home) by the grace of god.seriously... AND NOW.. my car is in a dealership in Mass, and the part needed is on backorder and will likely take more than a week... WTF?? Is this how its suppose to be with Ford? Is this what buy american is all about?

Is your problem the same I have with the starter relay? After they change the starter relay, everything was fine.

I am having the issue with power assist steering malfunction also. I have also had my 2012 ford focus in the shop 6 times for the recall on the transmission clutch. last time I just gave up. I am waiting to die in the car when i pull out and it stalls again so my husband can sue The dealership for it being attempted to be fixed 6 times. Now the other day i noticed when i pulled in a parking lot my car went straight when i tried to pull in a space thank goodness a car was not there. I turned my car off and back on there were not any warning light or anything. This morning i got in my car and started it up and it stated power steering assist failure refer to your book. I have never had a Ford lemon in all of my 10 new Ford cars and trucks, but this is a lemon!!!!. I wasted my $4000 cash down payment on this piece of junk, and the alternator already went out and cost me over $650, now this. I have read on the internet that this seems to be another problem with these 2012 focus.....so why has their not been a recall??? I guess it is going to turn into another Chevrolet Cobalt lawsuit.
as of today 1/30/15 it happened again when i went to get in my car at lunch no warning lights this time just the power steering did not work. I had to turn the car off and back on to get the steering to work again. ugh

Hi anitalclark1,

I want to look into this further to see how I can best assist. When was your most recent trip to the dealer? Please let me know, along with your mileage.

10/9/14 was the last time and as i told them whatever they do last about two weeks then it starts its hesitation and not changing gears again. + now 65,000 miles and if you will read my edit the power steering did not work again at lunch i had to shut off the car and restart it . There was not an error code this time. I have already had to replace the alternator.
