I have been researching the possible upgrade from standard front MK3 brakes for non-ST models to ST model brakes. What I found out so far is interesting; Ford has used the same bolt pattern for the caliper mounting bridge on several models so in theory you can use the calipers from several vehicles as long as you change the mount. I have on order Motorcraft calipers BRBCF 226/227, which are on back order to National (Michigan) but are supposed to be released this week. Since I cannot find any pictures of them, I do not know if they are the same as the calipers that I already have on hand from an very early 2013 ST or if they are something else. The Escape 4x4 calipers are the same as the Focus ST (at least those with the BV61-2B302, BV61-2B294 stamping in them). I do not know if the upgraded 2014/2015 ST rotors with 335mm will fit the 17" wheels or not, however some of the parts catalogues seem to indicate that the 226/227 calipers are used with the 335mm rotors.

The caliper mount you can order is BRBCF-28 for the use of BV61-2B302, BV-2b294 calipers which are a straight bolt on operation for the MK3 (at least an SE model like mine is).

I'm waiting to see if the 226/227 calipers are the same as the used ones that I have on hand. In any case, a posting will made to let you know. The only reason that one would go thru all of this is because all compact Ford models from the 1st generation Escort to the current MK3 Focus have front rotors that warp badly here in San Francisco. My MK3 is on its second go around with warped rotors (excessive run out) in nearly 40K miles.

Also, this gives the owner more options in higher performance brakes without spending 1500 USD or more for a big brake kit (which most people would not be able to take real advantage of unless you are using it as a weekend track car or for motor cross.) The disadvantage of the larger rotor is increased weight and rolling resistance (the 320mm rotor weighs anywhere from 1 to 3 lbs more (each) than the 278 mm rotor used as a stock rotor on a SE)

I will attempt to post pictures when I have completed the change over, assuming of course that I can figure out how to post the pictures here. Hey, I'm an old guy, where's my Studebaker?

You forgot to yell the following at us: "Get off my lawn!"

My SE won't need brakes for a while, but, this is some serious good work you're doing, and I wouldn't mind upgrading with good factory parts when the time comes. Of course, several have asked about the rear disc conversion, which, I'd like to do, but being realistic is not necessary on a fwd street car...

What? Drum brakes on a mk3??? I'd thought the 3's had rear disc's by now.

A lot of them are 4wd, but lesser cars such as mine have rear drum.

As the time comes for it, I'd like to change over just to join mid 20th century automotive technology.

What? Drum brakes on a mk3??? I'd thought the 3's had rear disc's by now.
My SE has the sport package and came with 4 wheel discs. My wife's is just a standard SE and has rear drums.

As the time comes for it, I'd like to change over just to join mid 20th century automotive technology.
I'd just swap out vehicles to a st, then you can swap out the suspension to Vogtlands.

These are the Wagner thermo quiets that fit the ST. The factory brake pads make brake dust like crazy. These were a cheaper solution and I have no complaints about them

Rear disc brake upgrades aren't really needed since rear brakes "are along for the ride." My 2000 SE sedan, sohc, 5 speed, had rear drums and it never acted up in all the years I owned it. However, the ZX3 I also had constant issues with the rear brakes; the self adjusters would never work correctly. Sometimes too tight; sometimes one side was too tight, even after replacing them twice with OEM parts didn't help in the long term. So, I ended up doing the SVT rear disc brake conversation on that vehicle. Actually did it twice; once with the discs used in the NON traction control units; found too much rear bias, so I did it again with the smaller discs used in SVT's with anti-slip/traction control and the rear brake bias went away.

Although they aren't needed, I'd rather change disc brakes over drums any day of the week.
