I had no idea splash guards were such heated debate material. People are going both ways, especially since some claim that it reduces MPG, whereas other people say it doesn't. Some people claim that for cars like our FF, there's no real impact to protecting the paint of the car. Others, obviously, argue the opposite.

I was thinking about buying the OEM ones from Ford since we get a vendor discount here. Is it worth buying? I have about a 75 mile commute each day, 90% on the freeway. The roads on a big stretch of the freeway is in poor condition.

Would this be worth it for me?

And what about the OEM bug deflector for the hood? Does it really protect the windshield and hood against bugs/rocks? Or is it mostly a gimmicky thing?

First new car and I'm trying to sort out between fact and fiction. :p

Remember that bug deflector is permanent. You DRILL HOLES in the hood to install it. It WILL reduce your resale value. as most second owners will never want it on the car. And it cannot easliy removed either.
I would guess it is one of the 'all time nerd' devices.. ever.
Maybe if you owned a 1970's full size station wagon, and had a family of seven...
For a sport hatch? no.

As for the splash guards, it is a personal thing.

Gravel or really poor roads yes the splash guards will protect your paint job.
If you never see those, then the splash guards are not going to matter for your paint.
For rain? they may be slightly/somewhat better as far as how much road water spray is kept off the paint.
As for MPG? minor, trivial.

Splash guards some folks like the look. Some do not.

For me? never bother. (also a negative on splash guards in snow.. If you drive over snowbanks/snowdrifts.. That may rip your splashguards right off.. Leaving them dangling half way, and damaging the car body too.)

Ah, good points all around!

If it indeed needs to be drilled, I'll pass on it. I don't know how long I'll be keeping the car, but if it drops resale value, then it's something I need to consider.

Splash guards are never going to touch the snow. If not for a random out of state trip, I would have never seen snow in the flesh.

But I am concerned about the gravel on some of the roads, especially where there are potholes and loose things stirring underneath. I suppose if that doesn't require drilling and the holes to hold the guards in place are already there, then it might not be such a bad idea in my case.

Even on good roads little debris can still ding your paint up. I'm not so big on the giant rally flaps people put on their MK3s but the OEM guards look good and don't stick out like a sore thumb.

That's my train of thought as well. As long as the impact to MPG is negligible, I wouldn't mind having them. I like the minimalist look of the OEM version.

Did your SE already have the holes drilled or did you have to get them installed/do them yourself?

I have the OE splash guards and I still pull 38 to 40mpg on highway trips. I average, consistently, 32-33 between tanks doing only my 6 mile daily commute. I dont think they impact fuel efficiency.

I've been over many different style speed bumps and none have given the guards any issues as they don't hang really low. I don't see snow much if at all in the Focus but if a guard caught some heavy snow they would would give before hurting the body as they aren't that stiff of a plastic.

Ironically my wife backed my STI up too close to a curb and ripped off my Rally Armor flap but fortunately was a an easy but not cheap fix.

Mine were dealer installed so I'm not sure of they had pre drilled holes.

I like them. I have the large gorilla off-road rally style flaps and did not notice a decrease in msg, despite the flaps sticking out so far. By far, my favorite part is how they look!

That said, mine do rub on speed bumps and leaving a steep driveway (especially when passengers are in the car). They rule for keeping salt and gravel spray off the sides of the car during the winter, but beware of backing up in deep snow!

I've noticed a lot of spray on the sides of my car after rains, and was thinking about getting them myself. I should have just had the dealer include them on delivery, as a "deal sweetener".

IF you get a bug deflector, get the AVS Aeroskin deflector. It goes on with 3M tape, and is easily removable, protects against rock chips, and looks pretty good. Here's a stock photo as to what they look like.

The thing I dont like about that one is it does not cover the leading edge of the hood. That seems to be where most of the chips I have had one previous cars I have had show up.

The picture I posted is sort of a crappy example. Whoever mounted it put it too high. I had one on my SGM hatch, and it came down far enough that you wouldn't actually see the leading edge.

I'm not sure why people have told you the OEM bug deflector is permanent. It certainly is not. The holes screwed in are in the underside of the hood and should someone choose to remove it (as I am doing this week) some detail work around those drilled holes will stave off any potential degredation... and really, it hardly makes it much worse than the already factory crap paint falling off at every edge.

PS. i'm removing the OEM one to pick up and install the AVS version as it definitely has a sleeker profile. I also use the Gorilla mud flaps as I find myself off-road from time to time and the OEM flaps were literally catching snow and not letting it go, resulting in blocks of ice growing in my wheel wells. After putting on the Gorillas I no longer have that problem as they are totally flat, and cheaper than Rally Armor. Also with the OEM flaps if you don't 3M film the painted parts that it overlays you will get some hard to deal with paint damage. Others have tried to tell me that's BS but the fact is after a dusty drive I can sometimes still see the online of where those edges were and it pissssseessss meeeeee offffffffff.

After I've driven my Oxford White hatchback in the rain, the top of the back bumper and lower portion of the hatch are filthy from road splash. Do rear splash guards help in reducing the amount of road dirt on these areas?

My flaps almost eliminated spray all around and I only get it on the front after sharp turns.

I've got rally armor universal mud flaps on my car, and in my personal opinion, they're great. Keep a lot of dirt and rocks from being launched everywhere. Only reason I put them on though is because I put 225's on my car instead of 215's. But overall they function really well for $20.
