I need to pull the motor to do further inspection. The head is already off.

The shop manual makes reference to removing the axle shafts for removal of the engine( from the top) but for the life of me I cannot see why,couldnt I just remove the converter and bell housing bolts to seperate the engine and trans and leave the trans in place ?

You can remove it without removing either axle. I just did it last week. You will however need to remove the alt/ps/ a/c bracket and harmonic balancer to get enough room to move it away from the trans. Also be sure to remove the bracket on the back side of the engine that supports the pass side axle. You will also have to remove an exhaust bracket that bolts up to the bellhousing to gain access to the hole in the bellhousing and remove the access cover to get to the 4 converter nuts. If you dont remove the radiator assy I would also remove the exhaust manifold so you will have plenty of clearance without hitting anything. Good Luck, Kars
