There is an instruction posted for speedometer self calibration for Focus in our how to archive. The instrument cluster in Focus can display the vehicle speed in digital readout using the odometer LCD by putting it in test mode.

The self calibration is based on assumption that the digital readout is the correct reading and physically repositioning the speedometer needle to match the digital readout. In my 2005 Focus, the digital speedometer readout and needle meter do not match, however the needle readout is dead-on using both the fixed-distance over time calculation and the speedometer readout on a portable GPS receiver.

Check the accuracy of your speedometer using the "speedometer check zone" on the freeway and a stop watch or better. DO NOT assume the digital readout in test mode is the correct speed.
