I know if I get a plug and play Sirius unit that it plays through the FM radio and gives FM quality at best. If I had one of those units and someday down the road bought a new HU with an AUX input on the front, could I plug into that and get the same quality as if I had a HU and tuner box?

I have the Sirius Sportster 5 ,

This is what I am using to hook it up to my stock radio ,

You will also need this cable to hook up the Sportster to the aux adapter if you go that route .

They also have the steering wheel control adapters at their site too .

My factory stereo doesn't have an AUX button so I don't think that would work. Besides, for the price of the Sirius unit, AUX box, and cables someone could just go and get an aftermarket HU and tuner box.

If you purchase any new Sirius unit you are going to need some type of fm adaptor or aux input....the wireless transmitters in the new units are absolutly horrible. A FM Modulator or Aux input will fix that problem. If you plan on getting a Aftermarket headunit i would just go that route, reason being so you dont have to install one of the dashmounted ones take it out then rerun the ant behind the radio...ontop of that if you subscribe the one unit when you get the new one then you need to call them up have them deactivate the one and activate the new one.
