So I'm still investigating whether or not I should shorten the stock antenna, as I don't want to lose radio reception. So here's my idea: Cut the antenna in half, then attach a length of wire equivalent to the amount of antenna that was removed. I would imagine I could solder or glue the wire to the antenna and then wrap it around the shaft. This way, I'll have the look of the shortened antenna without the loss of reception! What are your thoughts?

I'll give this a whirl in a few days and see what happens. I'd like to get my hands on a stock antenna to try it out on before I go hacking up my perfectly good antenna, maybe it's time for a trip to the junkyard...
