So i went home recently and got into a friends SVTF and noticed that the shift seemed way longer then mine. so i am wondering is there a way that i can tell if i have a short through in mine. any help would be great thanks.

Sounds like you might have answered your own question already...

Other than that, I'd suggest finding a thread with pics of the different shifters (there's a recent one with a pic of three side-by-side), then yanking off your boot and comparing. The stock SVT is both chrome and black, while the C-F-M, Steeda/Ford Racing ones are all chrome (colored, I mean). Can't speak for the other varieties.
