So I'm getting ready to order a rack for my 2014 hatch. Does anyone out there know the width of the crossbar? I tried to look what Thule would send me with the vehicle selector and they said I needed a 58". That just seems a bit wide.

that sounds about right.
the bars extend past the boot, so you're not looking at just what's in between.

I have a Yakima rack and was able to reuse my 48" crossbars on the Focus. There's not a lot of room on each side, but it works fine. Fwiw, Yakima recommends 58" as well. Maybe buy locally so they're easy to return for a larger size?

Well im not trying to buy a yakima or thule, they're just way too expensive. I was looking at getting a universal one from ebay or something because it's just to haul two bikes around. There was a 52" on ebay, but i just wasnt sure if it would be wide enough.
