I removed the front bumper cover for easy access to remove the whole oem filter shebang, unbelievable of what ford thought up.
Yeah I never understood why Ford went to the "lifetime" filter. I pulled mine apart after removing and at 102k it was so full of debris I couldn't believe the car was still running. Leaves .sticks. cigarette butts and pieces of candy wrapper. Lots of dust.

When my Brother got his 2005 I believe that was back in 2011 or 12 we replaced it with a full-length k&n cold air intake.

Yea that'd work also....IIRC K&N offered a couple few different options.

I have a 2006 ZX4 SE, 5 speed 2.0 and about 53K miles. I read about this lifetime filter and was like really?? Started searching and found this tutorial:

Found the Specter Filter at Autozone
Part # 8132

I used the two adapters that came with it and cut part of the MAF tube per the video. Car sounds amazing, it actually goes when you give it gas. Really happy for the $33 I spent. Haven't run a full tank through yet, so not sure on mileage.
