06 zx3
38,000 miles
rear brakes were squeaking when stopping


So i decided to replace the shoes(shoes only, not the drums). I followed my repair manual and re-adjusted the park brake. I re-set the auto adjuster all the way down(in?)

Now, when the rear is in the air, i can spin the wheel and it will make maybe a turn, turn and a half and it stops. Seems like there is a little too much friction. and after maybe 15 miles worth of driving the drums are extremely hot.

In the manual it says to spin the wheel and have someone push the brake pedal so the self adjusters will adjust. Could they be adjusting out too far maybe? or are the new shoes just getting used to the slightly worn drums?

I cant figure this out, and it seems like my gas milegae is really sucking since i did the brakes. Is it just in my head or do i have a problem?


Any help would be appreciated.

four in the back. I think i will do it the other way next time cuz i have a good torque wrench to put it back on to save me some time and to keep from laying on the ground lol


and, before i adjusted them, they spun freely. so i dont thinks its wheel bearings

Jeff 434, I am assuming you did the procedure correctly on the drum removal. if not, it can be fixed by buying another compression nut and tq the drum down (while turning it) to about 173 ft lbs.

Sounds to me like you have the shoes too tight. i am experiancing a similar problem now, my shoes must be worn down and are probably adjusted very close to the drum, they squeak a little after releasing the parking brake. After i get the first couple brakes in, no sqeak.

If the brake shoes are too close, I would back the self aduster off and maybe readust the parking brake to have a little more slack. Many times you can just blast the area clean with some brake cleaner and she'll be good to go.

Anyone else have an idea?

when i did the brake job, the parking brake was completely loose (no tension), and the self adjuster was backed off completely. i spun the wheels while on the jack stands and had my brother push the brake pedal. The ford repair manual says thats how you "centralize" the shoes to the rotor. you can hear the adjuster clicking as it adjusts out. And i dont think i have the park brake too tight cuz i have the same problem when its completely tensionless.

its like the adjuster is adjusting out too far. is that a possibility?

oh. Okay then. i've never changed my rear shoes like that. did you wipe the drum down with any emry cloth or spray the drum and area down with brake clean? before all was said and done did you add any brake grease to the contact points?

lubed all contact points, and i did a quick wipe of the inside of the drum. Im gonna take them back apart tomorrow and see what i can find. its both sides that are doing it and today my e-brake feels a lot tighter for some reason

well i took everything back apart, and this time i just took off the hub nut, and let me tell you, its so much easier that way.

I decided to re do everything and this time it works. i dont know what the deal was the first time, but i think it was how i had the auto adjuster set up. Also, i cleaned the drums really well, and i used some steel wool on the rusty spots. maybe it was just a fluke or maybe this time i did something different, but everything is great now (so far anyways)


EDIT:

Well, i jinxed myself and spoke too soon. went out to eat, got home, jacked her up and still the same problem. I said F[:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)] it and i put my old squeaky ass shoes back on. I can't even explain how LIVID i am right now. Im supposed to be leaving in the morning for vegas and im having these freakin problems.

But anyways, sorry for the rant, im just pissed. oh and they arent lockin up on me anymore. i just drove around and everything seems cherry, just like before. squeaks and all. maybe its the brand of shoes i bought.... anyone have problems with raybestos shoes before? guess thats what i get for putting cheap shit on my economy car [scratch]

I have had semi matalic pads sqeek like metal on metal. very poor. I switched to a organic cheaper pad compound (AutoZone Gold) and just cleaned my stuff VERY good and always lubed the contact points. no squeeks.

If you have rust spots or pits on the inside of the drum, that may be contributing to the problem, stuff has to be Clean! no grease on pad. the inside of the drum might have 'glazing' where some material has basicly burned into the metal or glazed onto it, in that case you need some fine grit emery cloth and just go at them very carefully and seen if that will clean them up.

BRAKES SUCK SOMETIME!

I would suggest getting a new nut and tq to spec, it is a compression nut made for one time use only. I've been told shops do use them over again, but I don't think it would be a good idea.

If you have a lot of miles, new drums and new shoes all fresh would also probably fix the issue. but that is money.

Keep us posted, maybe someone else will have a better suggestion

went to vegas and back this weekend for the NHRA drags. no problems with the factory shoes. Im gonna go to the dealer today and buy new nuts, dust caps, and see if they can get me some shoes and new springs. i only have 38,000 miles so i dont think ill need new drums yet. i might go have someone turn them so i know i have a nice clean and smooth surface.

I've never done a brake job on a Focus before, but I have a couple of general suggestions.

1) Can the shoes be shifted up and down in their mounts? If so, they may be off center. Think about it this way: make "C" shapes with both hands, hold them opposite on another, line them up vertically, then move one hand up or down while keeping the other stationary. If they're not lined up, it can cause the problem you describe. To fix, install the shoes, loosen the adjuster, install drum but don'w slide it on all the way, shift the drum up and down several times to line up, tighten adjuster.

2) If you're using cheap parts store shoes, the friction material may simply be too thick. Sand them down with 600-grit sandpaper, being careful not to leave any high spots. Caution: The shoes probably contain asbestos; wear a fine-particle dust mask while doing this so you don't inhale the dust.

1: Yeah the shoes shift, but i did exactly as you suggested when i was putting them on and i didnt have a problem with too much friction until after i had adjusted them.

2: This is the only explanation i have been able to come up with other than the new ones i bought had this coating on the metal frame part of the shoes that seemed like it might be messin up the movement of the self adjuster

A little drag (slight scraping sound when rotated) is perfectly acceptable. A little drag means your parking brake is adjusted correctly.

it was more than a little. the wheels wouldn't spin freely at all. maybe one full turn when in the air and i put a lot of effort into spinning them. and after a short drive you could smell that they were hot
