Got my new Focus SE hatch, sterling gray, Tuscany interior, manual transmission, sport suspension. Love the car but have a problem with the steering. At highway speeds dead center the steering is very firm, uncomfortable to change lanes using one hand and the steering does not return to center, have to steer back to center. No pull left or right. The service mgr agrees with me that its feels like something is binding. The tech says it is tight but does not think anything is wrong and Ford hasn’t offered much help to clarify.

Has anyone driven an SE with and without the sport package? Mine is the only sport equipped SE in town and the dealer is being told that the sport equipped SE drives heaver than the non sport. They have determined that mine drives heaver than the non sport models on the lot. Ford is sending a specialist next week to see if mine is defective. Seems like there should be a more scientific method to evaluate.

The electric power steering does take some getting used to. It's likely nothing is wrong but have the tech look at it anyway.

I have the same problem. It is a defective rack/sensor interface.Parts are hard to get due to a quality issue at TRW (the supplier of the rack assy).I have a note from ford stating this.I think they regret giving me a copy of this Ford missive. I called Ford corporate, got a return call from Ford Corp./Florida division. The are trying to get a new,non defective rack assy. I also got a case #.I appears the entire rack/sensor/electric assist assy. must be installed as a unit.
Look on my3cents.com for several other people with the same problem.
This problem can be fixed.I drove a different focus and it steered just fine.
We may have to get other people involved if this cannot be fixed in a timely manner.
