ok so here is the thing i have a 01 SOHC SPI focus, i had a K&N drop in oil filter for a year and now its starting to spudder when i idle and drive. It seems this moring to have a ping type noise to it when it spudders. I have just tryed cleaning my MAF and it helped a bit but didnt fix the problem, also i went back to a stock air filter in the mean time. I also changed the battery a few months ago, and a freind was telling me that it could have messed up my ECU.
I also made sure none of the firewall plugs fell out creating a vacum effect.

All help would be greatly appreciatied.

Actually my friends miata was spuddering and we changed the plugs and it fixed it, his check engine light was on aswell and it hasn't come back on since. Try changing the plugs.

50k since last plug change ?? That should be next on your list. If that doesn't help (hopefully it will), check if you had the recall of the fuel pump done on your car. That as well is a notorious problem.

Good luck

I think that changing the spark plug wires is a great idea. I was also having sputtering problems with my SPI a while ago and changing the spark plugs to the iridium’s solved my problems for the most part. But I also noticed that the stock wires kept sliding off the coil pack and at one point they fell off while I was driving. It was crazy I have never seen anything like that, the spark was jumping the gap too, lol. I replaced the stock wires with the focussport ones and love them. They grip much tighter and seem to give the car a tiny boost in power too... but that may just be me.

Anyway, here are 2 choices for you.

FocusSport:
