2001 focus sohc died. got 0340 cam position sensor so I replaced it. Did not fix. Took cover off and found recently replaced timing belt tensioner snapped, belt jumped. Fixed that, now runs beautiful, but keeps throwing 0340. Timing definitely correct. Possibly a defective sensor ?

Take a look at the sensor (damage?) and at wiring before replacement.

Fairly clear cut code in this case, no choices but sensor or wiring failure.

The dtc is not for timing, rather for not operating, the sensor is bad or bad wiring.

Exchanged cam sensor for another new one. So far no engine light. By the way this would be a 5 minute job if Ford had not put 1/8" of the fuel rail in way of removing sensor ! That's why I asked you all before I replaced it again. THANKS FOR YOUR ANSWERS. And this started over an aftermarket timing belt tensioner that lasted less than 20,000 miles !
