Hello all,

While switching over to my winter tires this afternoon, I noticed that my transmission appears to be covered in oil, or at least an oily substance. I'm unsure exactly what it is, but am concerned it could be a leak. Here's a picture. The lighter spot is where I rubbed with my finger to see what was on the transmission (MT). Should I be concerned about this? My Focus has about 37k miles.

Well it could be a leak. Id clean the entire engine bay area top and bottom so you can keep an eye out where the leak is coming from.

Yeah, that's more than the "normal" small amount you'd get from a vent at the top.

Have to look at the top side to see where it comes from.

Check my thread on the oil leak for manual tranny...

Dealer said no problem (Circuit Ford in Montreal-Nord for you Quantos)... whatever.

I said to the dealer I had oil leak from the MT ... he asked how I know... the oil leak is red.

He told me that the MK3 MTX75 don't use red mt oil??? Is this true?

Looks the same as me (the leaks) what you commented...

Pictures don't show seepage consistent with loosing more than a teaspoon full over the life of the car. With a couple quarts in the trans., running low isn't a worry from what I can see.

Could be much less than that, you'd be surprised what a mess a tiny amount of oil can look like once it spreads & gets dirty.

Second comment you quoted was to alleviate your concerns at the time over immediate damage, yours was less than the OP here but still not "normal" compared to any I've seen. At the time of your pictures the end of the case was dry, and the front had a light amount of oil coating most of it.

Yet to see any "red" tranny oil in the Ford MTX-75 stock, my Old Chevy P/U uses ATF as a std. fill & that IS red.

My older car is starting to seep here & there, trans. is still dryer than either of these.

Did you get a chance to head into your dealer for this yet? I want to look into some additional options.

I just noticed the same thing on my car. I also have 37k miles. However I do recall seeing this on my 95 Mystique ....
