hi all, i have a 2002 1.6lx focus, ive been losing quite a lot of engine oil and it looks like its being sucked into the air filter and dripping out through the bottom (air filter is soaked). has anyone else had this problem and know how easy/hard or expensive it is to repair. thanks in advance for any replys

It sounds like your PCV valve is clogged or the hose is collapsed and the crankcase breather vapours are backflowing via the crankcase vent hose (sometimes called the blowby hose) into the intake and onto your air filter. This normally should only happen during "high power" at or near WOT when there is maximum blowby and low intake vacuum. Other than at or near WOT (at lower power when there is vacuum) the normal flow of crankcase breather vapours is through the PCV valve into the intake, downstream of the TB, and the crankcase is vented (fresh air gets pulled in) through the vent/blowby hose. An engine that is not healthy (worn rings) and has excessive blowby will backflow more breather vapours into the intake and into the air filter.

If you're "losing" quite a bit of oil, that's not a good sign.

Check into the PCV system like grumpy said, but if there's so much oil that it's dripping out of the air filter, you've got other problems.

When it's running, if you pull the dipstick, will smokey vapors pour out?
