I couldn't find a topic related to oil consumption for the Focus PZEV, but if this has been
covered elsewhere please accept my apologies and refer me to the topic.

I have a 2003 Focus ZX3 PZEV with approximately 8500 miles on it. I have noticed that I go
through a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so. This seems excessive to me, but when I
mentioned it to the dealer, he said that Ford specs the oil consumption to be about 1
quart every 800 miles. What has been your experience with oil consumption?

thanks.

One quart every 800 miles? You'd be out of oil LONG before 3000!

Sorry to hear that the PZEV is spec'd to burn oil....
Maybe that's how the PZEV gets more power than the Zetec buy burning oil...

I have a 2.0L Zetec and my oil level shows full eveytime I change my oil.
If any oil is burned, it's not noticable on the dipstick.

I would call several more Ford Dealers and ask them the same question to see if you get consistent responses for oil consumption. Burning even a quart over 3K miles seems excessive.

He did say he noticed that he burned a quart about every 1K miles.
That doesn't seem right...
Seems to much for a new car unless that's the way the PZEV was designed.

Less emissions by burning more oil....

My '88 Ranger with 140k never needed oil between changes using a 5k interval. No noticeable level change on the dipstick either.
Traded it in for my focus.

Oil Burn

I have done 3 oil changes on my 03 PZEV and not a dropped burned.... I had a Escort years agao that did the same thing... burned a quart every 1000 mi or so... took into the dealer and found out the rings never seated properly.. they replaced all the rings under the warranty..
I would take it to a different dealer or go back and request to speak to the Service Manager. They are Bull****en ya.. if you get no repsonse from the Manager then ask to speak to the Regional Manager.... that should get there attention

Thank you all for your responses. I had a feeling that I was getting bad information from
the service guy, but I had recently talked to a VW owner, who said he was getting similar
results from his 4 Cyl. Jetta. I was wondering if something in engine technology had
changed. Anyway, I took the focus into the dealer for 9,000 mile service and asked him to
investigate the issue. He was unable to find anything as far as leaks, but he called Ford to
see if they could offer any guidance and Ford referred him to the Warranty & Policy Manual.
The relevant parts of which I have typed in below. It appears that I will have to keep a
better record and make frequent trips to the dealer to get this resolved.

Engine Oil Usage Guidelines
-----------------------------------

* Oil usage is normally greater during the first 10,000 miles of service. As mileage increases
during the warranty coverage period, oil usage generally improves.

* Cars and light trucks in normal service should get at least 1500 miles/quart after 10,000
miles of service. Severe service (e.g., towing, hauling, short trips, taxi, extended idling,
or law enforcement use) may result in greater oil usage.

Note: When an owner complains of oil usage (consumption), the dealership must determine
the amount of oil the engine uses before any major engine repairs are started. The owner
should be told to return to the delaership each time the engine needs oil. The amount of
oil, the date, and the mileage on the vehicle when the oil is added must be recorded in a
"LOG" maintained by VIN.
