Hey Everyone,

Its been a while since I was around when my engine with 1k on it sprung a oil leak. Now, sadly, I am back with some other problem(s) that are scarring the living shnit out of me.

To refresh, I have a 2014 Focus automatic. The car now has 25k on it. I always have noticed a slightly jerky drive at times (and have come to terms that this is normal). About a month ago, I has cruise control set to at 73 on my hour drive to work up 271N and out of nowhere the car started acting like it was running out of gas. The car RPM's dropped immediately and then jerked with a load clank and accelerated back to speed like nothing happened.

I was at speed and on relatively level road for miles. After calming my heart rate, I started listening, smelling and feeling for anything out of the norm. Nothing at all, the car seemed fine. Leaving from work checked for leaks and nothing.

Fast forward to a week and it did it again but this time I was not on cruise control and I was was doing about 65 at a manual cruise. A few days later, I went to pull out onto a main rod near my place ( engine was cold ) and in mid turn as I started to press the accelerator the car seemed shifted into 2nd or 3rd (hell maybe fourth) and all power was gone. Releasing the gas pedal in hopes the car would regain its thoughts, nothing happened. As I gradually pressed the gas, the engine did not rev nor did the RPMS rise. As a matter of fact, the motor seems like pressing the gas was killing the engine (Almost like an old flooded V8). I coasted to the side of the road and the the car jerked hard and then seemed fine. I put it off as a hiccup in the trans computer since I know if I take it to the shop, I will be without a car for a week and no answers other then everything looks fine.

Now this past Friday, pulling out onto a hill from a stop, the car went to shift into second gear and just lost everything it had (it may be crazy but seemed like the car applied some sort of brake, or it could just have been I was attempting a large incline). The car died but the motor was still running. Looking into my read view mirror there was a line of traffic coming fast around a small blind corner. Not wanting to get t-boned I attempted to drive straight into a slight ditch straight ahead.

I had some time to think once on the side of the road. I started pressing the gas pedal and nothing. It was almost like the car was in limp mode. I could give it small amounts of gas to seem the RPM rise 500and could feel the car want to move but then it would let go, all power lost, RPM down to 700 and the car stopped moving again.

No dash lights, messages and or warning. No smell, grinding or anything of that nature. I seriously thought the trans was gone. I put the shifter into low at a stop (and not gas), the trans clanked real loud (I could feel it this time in near my feet). I applied some gas and the the car stated to move. Once I reach about 5-10 miles the trans let go again so at a coast I put the trans back into drive and this time the car would move but I could not give it to much power or it would let go. I drove home another 3 miles at 20 MPH.

Got to the end of my street and decided to give it one last go. NORMAL. The god damn thing drove normal for the last 2 blocks.

It jerked again this morning on cruise so I had enough. I need to do something.

I know there is a HUGE issue and it almost caused a bad accident this time. I know I need to take it to the shop but before I do, I need some advice. It seems like dealing with the dealer is like dealing with lawyers. Does anyone have anything advice, knowledge, passed experiences with something like this. Maybe they might find something or maybe they try to take me down a long BS path about my driving habits but I want to be prepared when I show up. I can not afford to be running around playing the he said she said game.

Thanks in advance.

Naturally, you should take it in to your dealer. You may also want to to mention TSB 14-0215, which deal with chafing on a wire harness. There's more on 14-0215 on the second page of posts in this forum. Good luck!

Also simply could be a bad transmission. Mine had a massive power loss once while on my morning commute so I took it in and they had to perform the whole new seals and clutches thing. It hasn't had a major issue since...That is definitely a dangerous situation and since it's within the first 36k miles I'd make your dealer give you a loaner car while they get it sorted out.

Mine although a 2013 did that and I immediately took it to the dealer. Basically they Flashed the Bios ( Computer guys will know what I mean) and it has worked fine/better since. That was a year ago.

Yes, basically a software update, they flash the firmware of the TCM (Transmission Control Module).. I preferred the quicker shifts of the firmware I had before my repair but oh well...

Hi justingreer,

I recommend heading to your dealer to have this diagnosed. Once you have an appointment set up, please let me know so I can look into additional assistance.

I had been kinda overwhelmed for the past week or so. I am stopping down at the service dept today to make an appointment. If not today, I will be doing it first thing in the morning.

FYI I drove it to work today since I had to and it is did something different. I came to a stop sign to make a left hand turn. I did a rolling stop and then this time it just free reved for a second as it it was in neutral. I did notice right as I pressed the gas pedal to go (from the rolling stop), it shifted ( or was shifting) into 1st or low. I don't know if the timing was perfect or what but I must of confused the hell out of it. It simply felt like it went into neutral.

Anyways, I let off the gas for another second and the car slipped back into gear or something and had power again. I am making it my mission to make it to the dealer this weekend. I have been lucky all the times that the car has acted up. It could be bad if it does it on a main road or highway intersection.

Were you able to head to your dealer? Please let me know if your concern has been resolved. If not, please PM me your VIN, best daytime phone, full name, and dealer name/location.

So I finally made it to the dealer today but unfortunately not because I had time to spare.

Today the car went into limp mode, started misfiring and backfiring under from under hood. I managed to drive (slowly and cautiously) it to the dealer about 3 miles from my house. It died twice and was idling at radically in-between 1K and 2K RPM. Made it to the dealer service entrance and left the car running while I ran inside to get a service team member.

I was told to pull the car into the garage bay but as I got back to the car, the engine light was on but the car was running fine (still smelled a bit). I pulled it in and shut it off. The man, hope in a couple minutes later and BAM. No check engine light, nothing [???:)].

I was told there is not much they could do without the light on and I choose to leave and next time NEVER shut the car off before the. Is it standard to try to turn the car off and and back on to see if the engine light goes off? It not like there was not an issue if it was on to begin with. In my case, the light turned off and I lost all ground to stand on when saying there was something wrong. The guy never doubted me, but at the same time I ended up pulling out scratching my head knowing there is something very wrong. Thankfully as I pulled out into the road, the check engine light came on and this time it pulled right back into the bay and the guy booked it in at the dealerInn for the weekend.

Fingers crossed there is something found that is legit. Last thing I need is for the light not to come back on when the techs look at it and I get a phone call with some answer like "We tightened some connections" or something. I am so close to my warranty limit that if they do not get it fixed this round, I will go over 36K we all know what would happen next.. [B)]

Meagan, I am sending a PM with the information you are wanting right now.

Also thanks to everyone that posted.

Meagan,

For some reason I am unable to send a PM. I can email you the details if that works.
my email is (edited)
I got your messages! :) I think if it's unread it may show as undelivered? Either way, I'm responding shortly. :D

I also recommend editing your post to delete your email for your privacy. As a Social Media Specialist, I'm unable to email customers.

Service called me yesterday and informed me that they had to order an o2 sensor and that the car should be ready by noon today.

Anyone every heard of a bad o2 sensor causing these kinds of issues? If so, is it common?

Got the car back not to long ago and runs great. To bad the o2 sensor did not throw a light sooner. Customer Server was awesome, so, Meagan I bow to you. They addressed my biggest concern!

Thanks to everyone that chimed in!

Update:
Today the car threw the check engine light again. The dealer does not have time for it today so I headed down to Autozone and got it scanned. The code came back as P2195 (O2 Bank 1 Sensor 1) which I am pretty certain was the the reason before it was fixed.

Bad luck I guess.. Anyways, I am back at it but at least this time I know what the issue is.

Did Autozone give you a print of the code (for proof that an error existed)?
