Could be performance related but probably not :)

Has anyone else noticed how LONG this engine takes to warm-up when really cold outside?

Recent cold spell here in Eastern US had morning temps in low teens/single digits. My motor took WELL over 10 minutes to reach operating temp and that was only if I kept the heater off!! And this was first 5 mins in city and next 8 or so on the highway.

If I turned the heat on just as operating temp was reached the gauge would GO BACK DOWN!! I actually had to keep it at operating temp for a few minutes before turning on the heat in order to keep it at operating temp.

And what oil is everyone using? I've found Motul and Mobil 5w-20 that meets 948B specs. Of course neither is sold in the US. I've used the Motul and it seemed to do fine but last oil change I used the dealer and their synth blend NON-948B spec oil.

I plan on changing it in about 3k miles. My theory is the 948B is a low-ash oil which probably was spec'd for this engine to keep sludge down. If I can't find the oil I may as well accelerate the changes.

I noticed my temp gauge drop recently a few times during my drive to work on the coldest of days, but its still in the operating range so I just suspect its the shutters opening up and just never noticed it before.
I warm my car up in the morning while im smoking my cigarette and when I'm done I get in and im on the highway in about 2-3 minutes on my way to work.
I don't hit the heater until I've driven atleast 10 minutes to make sure its warm enough to stay warm.
The heat out the heater feels the same the whole drive(about 40 mins).
When I get off the highway is when the temp gauge drops a peg, not during.
That's what I found odd about it when I started to notice it.
The only time my car didn't feel warm out the vents was one time I didn't let it warm up before leaving work because the snow that day had traffic a complete mess and crawling.
It wouldn't heat up at all with the heater on even after 30+ minutes of crawling in traffic until I shut it off and waited for the car to warm up before turning the heat back on.
I don't recall any car i ever had doing that, but I would generally consider this normal if its in the operating range.

There is a thread on oil here for recommendations, I "just" noticed ford has motorcraft 5/20 full synthetic so im not much help on the oil question :p

Mine takes forever to warm up but I havent seen any issue with engine temp. As far as oil goes im using Pennzoil ultra platinum, when i can find it i buy 5 or 6 jugs at a time.

I too have noticed that my temps never pass the 1/4 line mark when the temps are under freezing. Maybe if I'm going up a huge mountain but it will always settle just under the 1/4 line. I'm using whatever the dealer 5w-20 is but brands shouldn't affect the coolant temp so much as to not reach optimal temps.

I’m in Minnesota and looked into this a bunch last year. My car also rarely gets to the 1/2 position on the temp gauge. Generally hovers around 1/4, to just above 1/4. I even convinced myself my thermostat was bad and replaced it this past summer. Same behavior this winter, so the thermostat was fine. I also blocked off the upper grill and 3/4 of the lower grill (not the inter cooler side). That helped a tad.

On the other hand, I get warm-hot air from the vent no problem. I tested it the other morning at -13F (-25C). I got warm air from the vents after 3 minutes and painfully HOT air on my hands in 9 minutes (hit the freeway at about 3 minutes in).

Just the way theses cars are I guess concerning coolant temps. I’m not concerned any more. Side note — I did pull my trailer at about -10F and hit 1/2 quite quickly on the freeway, so a little load is all it needs to heat up fully.

I’m using Mobil 1 AFE 0w-20 this winter - the old formula that meets 945A. The current formula doesn’t. Too hard to find 948B at a non-crazy price, so I don’t bother.

Pulling a trailer with one of these? You DA MAN!! ;)

Not sure why it takes so long to heat up. Looking into it a bit more the motor has two cooling circuits: one for the block and one for the head itself.

Heat to the passenger compartment is fed from coolant coming from the head so one would think it would heat up very quickly!

But this design was to ensure quick warm-up for the motor as a whole so who knows why it takes so long in really cold weather.
