New Winshield, Broke XM Antenna Now no Radio

220 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  pbfoot
We had a new windshield installed in our 2010 Focus in the driveway at our home and the guy
was moving fast, pulled the wire for the black antenna in the center above the windshield
and the wire broke as he was pulling. The wire looks to be a small coax type.

I think that's the XM radio antenna but now looking I don't see any regular FM antenna.
Also is there power in the coax that might have shorted and caused the problem?

I've been doing other work on the car and just finished that, took it for a test drive and now
the radio will not even turn on. Edit: The radio does turn on, indicates that it is tuned just no sound at all. Is there power also in that coax? Maybe a blown fuse?
I have to find the radio fuse and check that but any other ideas?
Edit: tried it again and it turns on and tunes FM but makes no sound at all not clicks pops or anything.

The guy seemed to know what he was doing and moved fast did a nice job other than the antenna.

He needs to fix what he broke.

OK just drove it over to the Safelite place and they are ordering the part.

Now, looking up higher for the radio display I see that it IS turning on and tuning stations
but there's no sound. I'm guessing a power amp fuse or maybe another wire got pulled
when he yanked on the antenna wire.
The guy was very nice but I think he should have cut into the area where that wire comes out.

Yes, trying to pull a wire antenna through polyurethane window sealer is stupid, should have taken 30 seconds to cut it out. The antenna workjing right is a major part of windshield work now and it needs to be done as well as the rest of the work. Their fault.

Just checked the fuses:
13 5A SYNC
38 20A Subwoofer
39 20A Radio
All are good, not sure what to try next.

Quit messing with it. It is on them to fix all of this. Just stop.

Right, but I wanted to do this one obvious thing since I expect them to drag their feet on it.
I'm not going to do anything more.

I probably should add that there are two power wire plugs and a 1/8" audio plug wire coming out from
the left hand side of the dash, that the previous owner installed. We've never tested or used them but
the radio always worked. I'm wondering if the wire that he pulled on was tangled with these.
In any case when they go to replace the antenna, they'll notice these and could claim that the car is
modified. I suppose all that I have to say is it worked before he pulled the wire so those wires are
not the issue.
