Hey, just joined the forums here. I'm getting my 2004 focus 2.3 ZX3 at the end of the month.(ordered it two weeks ago) I've read alot of good things on the 2.3 on this site and can't wait to get it. I'm already thinking of an intake and pulleys. Does this engine really respond to these kinds of mods like I've read. Also, I've seen the throttle body too and the exhaust. Out of those four mods, what would be the best manufacture for each. I'm sure it's all a choice of preference though but just wondering. This will be my first new car, right now I have an '88 escort gt. So any of your thoughts will be appreciated.

Welcome, and congrats on your new Focus! You will probably get as many answers as posts for which brands are best, so be prepared to hear some of everything. I personally have the Focus Central throttle body and their cold air intake on its way. Neither is in the car yet since it keeps being below zero out... but I think just having the TB sitting in the car is giving it a little extra performance![;)] jk of course. Oh, and I've heard installing the pulleys on our car can be really tricky and cause issues, but I don't exactly remember what. Someone on this forum has tried though, maybe he will post. again, welcome and enjoy your stay.[:)]

I believe it was disturbed who had a problem. As far as I can tell, on the crank pulley it is 2 pieces, the pulley itself and the crank trigger assembly. Make sure the bolts holding the 2 pieces together are tight. Maybe even threadlock them.

I've got an oil leak from my crank pulley as well. When I can, they are coming off and OEM is going back on.

I have the Focus Sport intake and Exhaust and I highly reccomend them. I wouldn't screw with a pulley unless some shop wants to install it and guarantee their work.

before you start mod'ing it see how you like it ..... i was quiet impressed with the power mine had when I first got it and the only reason I have the marcy CAI is because my girl bought it for me

Put about 1500 miles on with the pulleys, and the splash gaurd was in place.

I would recommend an intake first as it is a simple mod and makes a huge difference with this engine. Too many scary stories abt pulleys on the forums. When I went to Walter Marcys shop last summer He said He didnt like pulleys on this engine and thought that the stock pulley acted like a small engine vibration damper. If Borla redesigns their exhaust to have two cats I will probably get one and maybe a flex pipe that I think is enough mods for what is to remain a humble daily driver.

Welcome to the boards. If i were you i would think about intake and exhust. There are a few out and i have heard good things about them all. I wouldnt mess the the pullies or the throttle body...i dont think it is that big of a restriction and for the money i dont think it is worth it. There are also some racing headers out/coming out you might want to look into.

Well my dad is a mechanic at a ford dealership so I get all my work done for free and he nows what he is doing. I'll ask him about the pulley situation. I know I won't be able to refrain from putting mods on it since I grew up around mustangs and the drag strip. My brother has a '88 gt and my dad has a '70 boss 302 and a '03 mach1. I'm sure I'll love the car when I get it seeing as I have never had anything with power windows and ac but the old escort gt is still runnin strong. Thanks for all your responses.

after hearing you guys talk about the "big diff" with the intake ... I cant agree that much .. or maybe you have exhaust's too. I guess with an exhaust it would make a greater differance cause there is only so much air you can take in with a restrictve exh. also I think that the mass air is quiet restrictive it is only like a 2.5" dia. ?? but I do live the whistling sucking sound that the air makes

I am also pissed that I had to buy snow tires today ($200), I thought I would get by with the stocks in the snow but it is nasty where I now live .. I am not used to this crap -10 right now.. I was saving that money for the eibach sus. kit

if i'm not mistaken the 04 2.3 liter foci have freer flowing exhausts than the ealier models. supposedly sport tuned from what i've read somewhere. so it shouldn't be too bad if you go just intake for now. and about snow tires. i live up here in alaska and its about -20 ish daily and i get around fine with my stock pirelli tires. prettuy good tire for all season. so far i've only driven them in the snow and ice and they've been pretty stcky for me. snow tires are a huge item up ere for alot of people. i guess its personal preference. hope that helps.
