Hi guys, haven't posted in a while, but I have a question. I'm trying to hunt down an issue on my wifes '13 Focus. It's got 113,000 miles on it.

Here's the issue. It's has a bit of a low level growl at low speeds 5-10 mph, then it turns into a more rhythmic noise 15mph- 60 mph. I can really feel some vibrations that match the rhythm under my left foot when on the rest.
No change if i'm on or off the brakes. No change in noise if I'm taking left or right turns, very consistent.

Things I've tried. Rotating around the tires, the noise, vibration, growl does not follow.

All tires/wheels have been checked by tire shop for balance, out of round, and bent wheels. All pass.

I've replaced the drivers side front wheel bearing, motorcraft part- no change

Both rear wheel hubs were replaced less than 5,000 miles ago for another issue.

When up on stands, I can rotate all tires and feel no resistance, no noises. I even start the car, get it in gear, get it to 40 mph and feel nothing, hear nothing when on stands.

Axle shafts feel good, no play or clicking, but can't be certain of course.

I've replaced the rotors and pads with new motorcraft units last fall, still good.

So I'm at a loss. Only things I haven't changed were axle shafts and passenger front wheel bearing. Could it be something in the tranny?

I didn't check motor mounts, but these symptoms don't seem to match motor mount symptoms as it doesn't matter the RPM, acceleration, or deceleration, the noise is directly related to speed.

Please help, it's driving me crazy! LoL

I'm a newbee to the Focus. What is a PSM? Passenger side mount? Do these cars have issues with engine/trans mounts? What are the signs and symptoms of a bad mount and which ones are more problematic?

PSM= passenger side mount......

The psm is a typical wear item on this cars....Use a Ford only psm, don't cheap out, cheap aftermarket ones are crap. The dsm doesn't really give you problems. If you want you could always upgrade the lower mount to a poly one. The lower mount is just a roll resticer, to keep the motor from rocking back & forth being in a fwd vehicle, it doesn't hold the engine up.

So I think I've narrowed it down to the tires. I switched the fronts to the rear again, and the front end noise went away, but I could hear the back tires make noise above 20mph. Even though they were checked out by the tire shop and balanced, that's the source of the noise. I guess I'm relieved I can stop throwing parts at it, but also don't feel like buying tires because they still have 60% tread life.

I did inspect the motor mounts and saw nothing alarming, but I do get some vibration in the cabin at just above idle. Nothing too alarming to justify throwing money at it.

I would agree with the noise being the tires. I’ve had issues with every set of tires I’ve put on this thing since new with the tires cupping over time making the noise unbearable after so long

When I bought my 2012 a couple months ago it had a bad growl due to unusual tire wear. It was determined that the left rear upper control arm was bad and the alignment was out of spec. This caused the left rear tire to scallop which resulted in the noise.

Figure out what corner of the car this tire was on before your initial rotation and look at the suspension before you ruin another tire. You could also bring it in for an alignment inspection.

Thanks for the replies. I did have the alignment checked, all looks perfect. I'm going to the tire shop for a check up of alignment again on Wednesday, I'll talk to them about the tire that makes the noise and see what they say. I know which tire is making the noise, and it's now on the other rear side from where it was originally making noise. Hoping the opposite rotation will balance it out a tiny bit.

So what are the signs and symptom of a bad PSM? Vibration in the cabin perhaps?
My engine would rock whenever I'd shift (5spd), and it got worse with time. And...the better clue was the black shyte spewed all around the hydraulic PSM. I replaced mine around 100K. Easy / inexpensive fix.

Just looking at the motor mounts, doesn't mean they're good.....My psm look like the new oem Ford mount except for a little dust, made a world of difference.....

My first though was half shaft bearing... if your tires wearing funny at that age a d mileage. I'd suspect the struts. If in Arizona I have a like new 6k set from a totalled 2015.

Agree with the peeps above. I'm switching out mine (2 so far) and I know for a fact its the passenger side mount. The newer transmission mounts localized the vibration. When I get mine switched out I'll let you know the difference. Maybe take a before and after vid. ?
