I would find a new mechanic, quickly. Techron does very little, and you can add a quart of fuel cleaner once a year that does a better job at a lot less price. I put 350,000 miles on my Dodge Neon, and now 113,000+ miles on my Focus with probably 95% Costco gas. Never ANY problem with the injectors and fuel system. I've used Chevron several times to test it... no difference in MPG between Costco & Chevron. Now, Arco is a different story. I've never put it in my Focus, and never will. With my Neon, the Arco MPG was lower, and the one time I climbed a 7% grade with it, there was a little roughness in the engine and a loss of 2-3 MPH. Maybe it's become better in the 10 years or so I've stayed away from it.
Forgot to mention, this was at my Ford dealership! It wasn't at some independent mechanic.

We used to use Arco way back in the day and definitely had loss of MPG. I can't comment on engine power, but there was a definite reduction in MPG. This was also about 7-8 years ago.

I'm going to start doing my own oil change on my '12 Focus, had it for ~ 18 months now, been using Ford "The Works" but I'm tired of 1 hour+ waits.

Quick question: Is Castrol GTX "good enough", or should I go with Mobil 1? Also, assuming Mobil 1 is the answer, would the Fram Ulta Synthetic be fine for the filter? I will be changing the oil every 5,000 miles, easy enough to tell when it is due for a change (45k, 50k, 55k, etc).

'12 Focus, 5MT. It has about 45k on it now, unfortunately I don't drive it anymore, my 18 year old son has taken it over. My current driver is an '01 PT Cruiser. [:(] The things we do for our children.

Oil Extractor

Anyone used the Topsider extractor on these vehicles? If so how did it do? IF I can reach the filter without getting the ramps out and the Topsider will perform I'll do it myself rather than the Quick Lane.
I use the Topsider on my Mazda MPV, mainly for cleanliness as I can easily reach the drain plug on that vehicle. It sucks....dry. I pulled the drain plug after the first go with it and nary a drop of oil.

so my ?? for the Turbo ST engine, not the regular 2.0.
On Amazon, too many reviews of all the extractors having failures from a large enough percentage I would worry about buying one.

I am certain I can use my hand vacuum tool and a bottle (for FREE). Only issue would be the bottle I have is about 2 quarts, not six.
But the seal is just a two hole butyl bottle stopper, (with chemistry lab fittings).. so easy as pie to pull and drain.
What I need to do is check the fill hole clearance.. To see if any easy path to the bottom.
If so, I would buy an aluminum tube to slip down there, and use a short flex line with it. (less issues with line collapse. plus the Al tube can take the heat of a hot engine better)

may check this clearance thing today..

ADDED: checked the oil fill opening. No go. blocked to any tubing wanting to hit bottom. Then the dip stick tube is too small for 3/8" diameter tubing. (1/4" would have to be very thin wall to work well, and then it would collapse..)
I think it is going to be getting under the car for all time. Unless I can find a thin wall tubing which is flexible and strong to resist collapsing. An aluminum tube is out. The shaft of the dipstick tube bends.. and I would hate to bend it wrong screwing around with a stiff aluminum tube.

I live next to a Ford Parts Superstore. It's right next to the (now defunct) manufacturing plant and noticed that they also sell their own Ford branded oils. Anyone used these?

Agreed, Topsider no good on these vehicles. Tube will not go far enough into the sump.

Tube down the dipstick one is common for boating use and it works there (even a surprisingly small one).

IMHO for these it's no advantage though, since the filter isn't accessible from above.

What brand name is used?

Don't know what's avail. down under, here an associated (owned) brand is std. fill for all the vehicles, and it's avail. from more locations than just Dealers.

yes, I have one and tried it on the Focus. You cannot get the tube down far enough to reach the sump. It bottoms out pretty soon after it goes into the oil dipstick tube. The dipstick tube must narrow at some point. The plus on using the extractor would be less risk of mess and oil running over your (gloved) hand when you pull the plug. On my Mazda MPV it will literally pull every drop out of the sump. Undo the sump plug to check and not one drop of oil appeared. OK had I left the plug out for several minutes maybe, I think you get the drift.

Never used anything else on mine, factory fill of Motorcraft semi-synthetic is reasonably priced from the right source here.

They spec. decent lubricants for all the factory fills - obviously you can go to a full synthetic if you want something better for engine oil.

I just changed oil on my 2016 2.0
I noticed a larger amount of oil flowing from the oil filter mount on the engine
After removing the filter .
I had a 2012 Fusion with a 2.5 very little oil flow .after removing filter

What I noticed the first time I changed oil was how long it took for the oil pressure light to go off. I've never bothered with a 'filter pre-fill' on any of my vehicles and never had an issue, but I do now on this one, and may as well on the others. My ramps have extensions that allow me to just get the car high enough to reach the drain plug so it was not a case of the vehicle being perched too high on the ramps. I also note that it drains completely. I have to put back the full 4.5 qts. It also uses the same filter as my sons Mazda 6 which is a 2.5 ltr, motor and 5 qt capacity sump.

That's odd. When I change the oil on my '13 Focus, the oil light goes out after a couple of seconds. I have been using Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 5W-20 and the Ford oil filter.

So i've been having my oil change done at the Ford Quick Lane since my car was new. I'm at about 35k miles and i've had it changed every 5k using the Motorcraft synblend they use. I'm wanting to start doing my own service since i hate waiting forever at the quicklane and i want to switch to full synthetic oil. I didnt want to start another new thread on the best oil so i thought i'd get some opinions here. I was reading some other threads that stated Penzoil Ultra had the lowest NOAK numbers which meant less carbon build up on the valves. They were older threads though, is that still the case? Is Penzoil Ultra or i think it's called Ultra platnium with pure plus tech now or something like that, still good? I've used Castrol full synthetic in my cars in the past. Or does it really matter? i change my oil ever 5k. i just want to start using full synthetic now.

I take photos of the receipts, oil & filter and keep the receipt hardcopies as I'm (and I think you) are still under warranty. I think you'll get more views on what's best / what's worst on oil than there are tweets from Donald.

I have used Bosch distance plus on other vehicles and was quite happy with them until one started to leak after a few months and I found that it was slightly loose, I could re-tighten it by hand. I shied away after that. That was a first for me, I've never had a filter come loose.

lol thanks for the info. I had a Mini cooper S before and it recommend Castrol syntec, plus at the time i worked at a Oil Can Henry's which used Castrol. I like the oil. i'll probably stick with the motorcraft filter. From what i've read, it's a great filter and they are cheap at Walmart.

How accurate is the intelligent oil-life monitor? is it pretty accurate? better than we just change it at 4k/5k miles or whatever since some miles are highway/local etc.
