Yup, Pennzoil Ultra and Platinum, Castrol Edge, Valvoline Synpower, Quaker State Ultimate Durability and the 4 flavors of Mobil1 available at most WalMarts are absolute junk products.

Actually these are all great motor oils that are likely far better than any car needs, especially if paired with a sensible oil change interval. You're welcome to spend two or three times the WalMart price on a "true" synthetic. But I bet your car won't last any longer.
Group III, "synthetic oils", refined from old school dead dinosaur technology crude oil, or cutting edge technology Group IV PAO true synthetic oils?

Research the differences. I think you may find they are worth it. There's much more to a motor oil than merely how long the engine will last.

Pennzoil Platinum is a great high end Group III oil.
Group V oils are over kill. Redline, Motul etc.

I'll stick with my Pennzoil Platinum which is highly recommended over at BITOG.
Who is BITOG? Anonymous, unknown, mysterious screen names making posts that have unknown axes to grind or could be on the payroll of a big oil industry company spreading dis-information about competitors products? Nah, that would never happen. The big oil industry is so honest and ethical. [:D] I personally have witnessed what are in my opinion altered oil analysis test results posted there. The, "information", spread there I find highly questionable and I don't bother going there anymore.

If you'd like to uncover what your hard earned money is supporting, watch the below three minute video. Are you really comfortable supporting this? -

At first I thought this statement was just plain craziness. A couple minutes later I thought that fuel economy, ease of starting in below zero weather, and catalytic converter contamination are also important traits of motor oil.

But even if all of those aspects were superbly handled by a given oil who would give a crap if the motor did not last as long as possible?

I got my first oil change a little south of 3k miles, mainly b/c my sales guy told me to bring it in 3 months after I got the car and that the oil change would be on them. It actually wasn't a bad idea since the car was built in 08/12 and I got the oil changed in 08/13 (bought the car 05/13).

I just got the second oil change at 7500 miles, plus a tire rotation. When I got my car, I bought a VCP Agreement from AutoNation for $195, which covers oil changes & tire rotations for 3 years/36k miles. I plan on doing the 7500 mile service intervals from here on out.

I buy my oil at Wally World. Most of the oil companies are reluctant to disclose their formulation and base stock but of the oils you mentioned, Pennzoil Ultra stands out. When it was first introduced, it was formulated with Group III base stock and had specs very similar to Valvoline Synpower and Platinum. In November of 2011, it was reformulated and the NOACK volatility number dropped from 12.6 to 5 (for 5W-20 oil) This excellent NOACK score could usually only be achieved using premium Group IV or Group V base stock.

Since a 5 gallon jug of Pennzoil Ultra sells for only $2 more than Pennzoil Platinum at Walmart (about $28), it is the best bargain available in a synthetic.

These figures don't lie:

Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20 (reformulated) has a NOACK of 5
load carrying capacity/film strength = 86,034 psi @ 230* F
zinc = 806 ppm
phos = 812 ppm
moly = 66 ppm
*Note: Ultra was reformulated Nov 2011 to SN
Old Ultra SM had a NOACK of 12.6- Make sure you check the date code on the jug. Don't buy old stock!

Low NOACK (oil volatility) is important in the direct injected MK3 engine. Synthetic oil with a low NOACK number will deter the formation of carbon on intake valves.

Walmart also carries the genuine Motorcraft FL-910S oil filter for the MK3 Focus for $3.97.

Ok Ford dealers must like 5000 miles that is what it has been on all of them I have bought. LOL
I understand where you are coming from. Ive seen them do that before. But my contract is for the 7500 service interval. they even wrote the mileage out 7500 on the sticker in the corner of my windshield.

If they sold 0W-20 in Ultra. I'd buy it. But unfortunately they don't. So I'm sitting with 0W-20 Pennzoil Platinum. Just as good. [wave]

Ultra seems like a great, albeit underappreciated, oil. For those who turn up their noses at Group III synthetics made from crude oil, be aware Ultra's base stock is made from natural gas, which allows the exceptionally low Noack values.

In the petroleum world, even natural gas-derived base stocks are condsidering "Group III" products, but Ultra sure looks equal to just about any oil on the market. And at $28/5 quarts it's a absolute steal.

On the other hand, for many of us maybe it's all pointless: the DCT will probably expire long before intake valve deposits are an issue.

Watch any of the video's on YouTube regarding this well documented case you wish. It's all there. Do you really support this crap by purchasing Royal Dutch Shell products such as Pennzoil?

Yes I support a really good oil. Not to mention, I also get their V-Power 93 at my local Shell. Do I also really fill up at BP because AMEX is giving me a $5 credit for every $25 I spend? Yes.

So a company that has brutalized people and more, (as the video's document), means nothing to you. Merry Christmas.
Actually, it does bother me. If you will show me another 5W-20 synthetic oil with a NOACK score of 5 for less than $30, I will buy it instead. (There aren't any)

I can't see paying twice as much for Amsoil to get low NOACK synthetic oil.

I also don't like what Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons did when he slaughtered an elephant but I still have my domains there.

I have learned to leave people to their own devices. They will eventually get what's coming to them.

Look at O.J. Simpson. Many think he got away with murder yet his own arrogance did him in years later. Like Icarus, these guys will eventually fly too close to the sun and get burned.

The truth is that many American companies engage in atrocious behavior. Do you own an Ipad, Iphone or Ipod? Apple contracts out to Foxconn in China who so abuses their workers that they had to install suicide nets to keep the employees from killing themselves by jumping from the roof of the building.

If you were to stop buying from every company that commits immoral or reprehensible acts in the name of capitalism, you won't be bringing home many technology items.

How do I know that those videos are legit? How do I know those videos aren't being produced by BP or Sonoco so people like you can avoid their products? Just because you show me some video, doesn't mean I'm going to stop using a really good oil or really cheap gas.
