Hi everyone! Just joined this forum.., I've tried before but never managed to get passed the capcha thing.

Anyway, I have had a 2003 1.8L focus sedan for about a year and a half, largely without incident. In the past 3-4 weeks however several things have been happening:

1) 4 weeks ago, began starting rough, petrol smell at the back of the car

2) 2-3 weeks ago began idling rough while stationary at any time

3) 1 week ago, it actually cut out several times while idling

4) yesterday, after a short 15km drive, the temperature gauge on the instrument panel indicated about half way between hot and cold, but the car had a very unhealthy smell, the coolant was boiling, and I could hear a hissing sound coming from the back of the engine (the hissing sound stopped when i released the pressure from the coolant tank - carefully as it was boiling and wanted to spray out the top)

Firstly, the fuel supply issue. Before replacing the fuel pump, I decided to try changing the fuel regulator. The reason being, there is some damage to the return pipe on the top of the regulator.

If that doesn't solve the supply issue, I plan on changing the fuel pump and filter.

Secondly, the fans. I have checked every fuse in the engine bay fuse box with a multimeter, all seem ok. This car has twin fans, so has a resistor assembly. I tested that too and got about 1 ohm which seems low, but I wouldn't know what its meant to be.

I also connected each of the fans directly to a battery to test their functionality. The upper fan spun fine, but the lower fan didn't do much at all. I still figure the working fan should kick in though when its hot though yeah? Either way, I have ordered a new set of twin radiator fans.

What I am hoping someone can do though is point me in the right direction as to whether these are separate, unrelated issues, or if I am seeing symptoms of something else, like a faulty engine management system ECU.

Pretty rare to have ECU malfunctions unless you've jumped the battery badly or been in a flood. Or tried welding without disconnecting the battery...

The NA Focus was known for melted resistors in the fan assembly, but if you tested them you would have seen the burnt mess that indicated that.

Is your petrol smell in the exhaust or is it present when it's just parked? If it's running rough, you may have something as simple as a bad O2 sensor making it run rich.

Any Check Engine Lights on?
