My 2014 (5 speed, SE, 94k miles) has recently started making a terrible noise when I turn the steering wheel. I can only describe it as metal on metal grinding, both with the car on or off. The power steering still works but it kind of gets hung up going around turns and seems to have some dead spots. No warning lights on or power steering assist faults yet. Any help is appreciated.

Obviously something wrong, but I would want to isolate whether it is the steering or suspension first.

Are you able to Jack up the car and remove the steering tie rods from the spindles?

With that done you can see if it is a strut problem or the rack.

I'm thinking the bearings in your strut mount are done. The sound you are hearing is the tension being released by the spring when the force applied (turning) is enough to force the strut mount bearing to move.
