Hi,

I have replaced my speakers with:

Rockford Fosgate r165 and Sony Xs-fb1620e, I have also sound dampened all 4 doors.I have lost a fair bit of bass, mids and highs are very clear and good, however I don’t understand how stock speakers that are made out of paper produced a better bass. Is it due to the fact that there isn’t enough power coming form the head unit and it requires a small amp? Or will I need amp and separate sub sub?

You may have the speakers wired out of phase. Reverse the positive and negative wires on the speakers.

You need an amplifier to run upgraded speakers. The factory amplifier will push a paper cone speaker maybe 1/2 of an inch. The same amplifier can only push an upgraded speaker 1/8 of an inch. Therefore you have no bass.

Better speakers take more power which also means they need more power.
It is very important when upgrading speakers that you do the research to find the best speakers that will work on a low-power stock system.

I thought so, you think Alpine KTP-445 would be sufficient?

Yea that looks like a very well paired amp with those speakers. That thing is pretty popular too.
I managed to change the speakers. However not very comfortable installing the amp. How difficult would this be? I’m more worried about the wiring situation. There was a guide somewhere on these forums, however all of the pictures are gone so no good.

So I have a 17 focus st and I upgraded the stock front speakers and added a sub and amp. Look into the dsr-1 from Rockford Fosgate yes it’s a little money upfront however the upgrade possibilities are endless and there is NO wire splicing and trying to figure out what wire is what. You could go with a regular line converter however I highly recommend this device I love it and it works amazing. Any questions let me know.

Thanks for the info. How easy is it to install? I’m thinking of putting a sub but only a smaller one under the seat and not the boot. How much wiring does this require?

It is super easy and only requires a dsr-1 and a meastro af02 harness (sold separate). If you go onto Rockford Fosgate’s website you’ll find everything you need there! However one issue is the ground coming from the dsr-1, DO NOT USE THE FACTORY GROUND WIRES, just make your own and ground it

well, there is 3 grounds that Come from the factory side harness, however there are then 3 grounds that lead into 1 small wire for the dsr-1. You’ll see what I mean if you get one. It is best just to ground that wire to where ever you have your amp grounded, if not when you depress the brake it causes a horrible buzzing noise and when you use your turn signals as well. So that fixed the problem.

Oh wow, I need to check that out. The buzzing when braking is happening on mine with the 10.4" tesla screen although it uses the factory harness to plug into the back of the HU.

If your using a dsr-1 then yes I would check that. If not definitely heck your other grounds cause that’s what was causing my issues and it seems to be pretty common with the focus and the dsr-1
