Car has a hum or whir from The back seat.


So I Jack the car up.


I shake both wheels no movement, up or down, left or right.


so I spin both wheels, rear driver: quiet

Rear passenger: noisey

What do you think it is?

Movin' ya into Brakes, Suspension & Chassis

Wheel bearing is the obvious reply, describe the noise better to be sure.

(brake hdwe. broken & dragging/ drum against backing plate/etc. are other noise possibilities)

It gets louder with speed. Haven't noticed very much change while turning.



I don't think its tires because when I lifted the rear end off the ground and spun the wheels it made noise. Tires were not touching the ground.

Haha after reading I doubt its a tire, it stays the same for all pavement.

hum or whir when spinning off the ground sounds like the bearing, squeals- grinds - etc. are more brake related.

No squeals... Sounds like sand moving? How do I tell if its a rear brake? Not sure how grinding would sound like

Your "louder with speed" pretty much nailed the bearing diagnosis.

Something rubbing doesn't often change volume that way.

"sand moving" can be brake shoes rubbing or drum on backing plate, not necessarily an issue. Usually don't get that when worn in from the shoes, common for new ones.

I am pretty sure my drums are gone or close to it. I have not replaced them at all.

However the only thing that's a bit confusing is the lack of wobble.

Is that shh while slow moving mean its brakes? Because as I drive its a definite hum.

There's a certain amount of low level brake noise that's normal most of the time when spinning a wheel by hand, nothing that you'd hear when driving.

If a bearing is worn enough to wobble, it's REALLY gone & might not make it far before falling apart. These ball bearings are different than tapered roller bearings that can have free play. Wear on balls/races will cause noise before any wiggle.

It'll last as long as it lasts IMHO, potholes load it as much as Auto-X.

I've had them last hundreds of miles before replacement, only once had one give up & that soon after it started getting noisy (all on other cars with similar setups).
