i think the reason for not aving a redline is the ecu has a fuel shutoff at about 6.5k-7.2k depending on what kind of ecu stuff you got.

as for it hurting the engine, im not totaly sure myself, but i think if you shift below is say 4750 most of the time, and under 6 when just having fun, ( hell run it out if you race)

then id think youd be fine, heck on new engiens its good to run um kidna warm, (3.5-5.5k) so they can break in, atleast it works for most motors...

anyways aslong as your not doing 6k shifts everytime i think youll be fine, mostly its your cruzing speed, like when on the freeway, keep that in the 2k-3.5k range, but of course its not going to kill you to run it higher. might(pretty sure it will) decrese engine life by some small percent

thats my take on it, if i mesed something up really bad someone correct me!

levi

p.s. WELCOME TO THE FOURMS!!!!! its a great place here, i know i love it here

EDIT: fixed the word shift....

lets not forget that the contour and ZX2(escort) had the Zetec has well though they did actully have valve timming on the exhaust cam (which was only for emissions control). But anyway they did have a redline on the tach and it was 6500 rpm. Our motors can rev they just don't have the cam adjusted right from the factory thats why there feels like there is no power up there. But I take mine up there I just got backk from the track sunday and I ran to 6.2k to 6.5k run after run and almost all of them were back to back [:D] [burnout]

But remember how you treat it depends on how long it last. If you dog on it constantly, redline shifts, then sure your going to have a decresed engine life .

On the SPI powered escorts w/ a tach (My sister has one) the redline was at 6250 rpm that bog you feel is probably the rev limiter kickin' in.
STUPID [?|] FORD! [?|] Now that I have my Short shift, my next mods on the list are the SD coil pack, and a Xcal2. That should get rid of that gosh darned bog. w00t! [woot]

I shit my car just before the limiter alot.( it's up around 7k.)You can feel it stop pulling by then so it's time to shit anyway. If you properly maintain your car and use GOOD oil,you won't hurt anything.

Mines an automatic, and will pull up to 7000 rpm when I nail the gas.Passing gear takes it all the way to the top before it changes gear. Does this mean it will hurt my engine just by flooring the car?Mods are intake and cat back exhaust.

i don't know about shitting the car, that would kind of hurt the ole rear end, but shifting works great too

now now people lets not get carried away. the reason what the focus does not show a red line is because the tach only goes to 7... the redline is at 7 but the rev limited is set at like 6,800 if you are not chipped. the only problem with this is your will make significantly less power up above 6k rpms without supporting mods. so even if you race i would shift (no shit) no later than 6k-6.2k.

The stock zetec make peak hp at around 5500 so I would shift at 6000. I beat the hell out of my car and she loves it. If you would like to help your gas mileage out, than shift at about 3-3500. Thats what I do

hehe sorry about the whole shift hing, i kind unleased a can of worms :p

but i tend to shift right after the power band, because you dont have to pund your gas pedle to get it there in the low gears, so if anything it would give you better gas milage...

i do the 5.5k shift all the time and i havent gotten a tank of gas under 30mpg (i track it) for about 2 months.... but im not pounding the gas pedale to get my 5k shifts....

but the thing you have to think about is how many times does your engine fire per day? that is what will determine how lonf your engine will last,

i like to think of it this way, even if your shifting at high RPMS you are going to accelerate faster, so you get to the cruzing rpm faster, so how many times the engine really fire???

so as long asyour cruzing 1.5-3k rpm instead of 4-6k i think you will be fine, cause your acel times arnt that long....

i dunno it would kinda be fun to find out how many times a day and engine fires when drive by the "standered" in hwy and city, then see how many times an engine when its driven with high shift rpms and low cruze rpms, in hwy and city.

maybe its jsut me who would think so *shrugs*

After I put my CIA on and 4-1 header,2.5 flex,Magnaflow exhaust I could actually pull right into the rev limiter. Before those mods, the engine pretty much gave up around 6k,so there wasn't really any reason to rev it higher. An XCAL is on order.I'm just shitting here waiting for UPS.....

my svt redline is around 7200...thats when the fuel is cut, at that point i am making no power. my powerband drops at around 6900, so if it makes you feel better, your not hurting anything, but by the time you hit redline, you have past your optimum shifting point. the whole reason they make a rev limiter, wether it cuts fuel or timing, is to save your internals. once you dyno tune, you will know your best shift point. for instance, my eclipse gsx redlined at 6500..but i stopped boosting around 6200 so going over that was a waste of gas..unless i was showing off my exhaust and bov........
