I was wondering what people's thoughts are on radar detectors. The cops around my town can be really big a$$holes. Aside from that I'm always on out of state road trips (Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati). I don't really speed around town (the highways are a different story...)but my car is going to have an intake and an exhaust soon so I know I'm going to be drawing some attention. The one I'm looking at is the Cobra 9930. I know this probably a really lame thing to factor in but I really like the compass on it. I know I could buy a compass for a lot cheaper but its still a bonus on a radar.

Heres the link to the 9930

If someone could create a poll for this I'd really appreciate it... I can't seem to figure out how to do it

1. If you don't speed... then why bother???

2. If you're gonna be drawing attention with the intake and exhaust, the radar detector is gonna make it worse. If pulled over for speeding, the cop may be willing to just give you a warning if you play it right, but after seeing your radar detector he's just gonna write you the ticket no questions asked.

not worth it in my opinion. though others will say they can't live without it.

yea i say they are worth it, when that thing goes on i tap my brakes to the speed limit and when its off im ok again, ill tell you this tho, if u get pulled over for speeding and they see it, no breaks what so ever! their gonna hit you as hard as they can with the fine and whatnot
Michigan state followed me and my radar didnt go off at all, and they pulled me over and i got a 100 dollar ticket for 5 over!

^^ if they followed you maybe they weren't using their radar, maybe they just went by their own speedometer and wrote you the ticket, LOL

jeez... yeah I mean on the highways (speed limit 65) I'll usually go 85. The reason I'm thinking about it is during my last trip to baltimore I was pacing this bmw 5 series at 90-ish on the highway. I saw the cop pull out of the woods on the side of the road so I shifted into 4th and slowed down w/o brake lights. The guy in front of me wasn't so observant or lucky and ended up getting pulled over (after the cop tailed me trying to get me to speed over the limit). I just thought it would be wayyyyy too easy for me to be in that other guys place.

you guys think if I conceal it well enough/have in a place that makes it easy to remove from my dashboard it would be okay?

Extremely worth it, I only speed on the highways, NEVER in the city much more then 5 over MAX but on the highway, it's saved me from probably a dozen tickets, if not more.

I don't know about NJ, but a lot of cops in NY have started running laser detectors, and if you get tagged with one of them even a radar/laser detector isn't going to help - the laser is instant pulse, and the beam spread is minimal, so the only way for laser detector to go off is when it's too late. Wouldn't want you too feel invincible with that radar detector [8D]

If they have laser around you, your screwed.

When you ask if it's worth it, it depends on how much you are going to spend. If you spend the money (I have a V1), it's well worth it. If not, forget about it.

I mounted mine so the cops can't see it and people in general can't see it from outside the car. So, I don't have to worry about it being stolen.

Just make sure you don't get a cheap POS one.... if you want the best, go with an ESCORT....

And for Klondike, it's a radar detector, not a cop detector.

Ive been using a detector for about 5 or 6 years now. Used a Bel for years, and recently switched up to a Escort 8500 X50. After setting it up properly, it kicks ass.

I agree its had to have saved me from about a dozen tickets as well.

I have actually gotten two tickets since I had one, but the detector wouldnt have saved me from them. One was paced from behind (knuckle head didnt look in the rearview). And the other was from one of those speed monitoring planes (Im the only one I know thats ever gotten tagged by one of those things).

Speed Monitoring Planes, woah ... glad that stuff ain't up here in Canada. All we have to watch for are those RCMP radar mounted Moose they hide in the bush with up here. Sneak out of the bush just slightly and you just assume it's an animal in the ditch.... trick buggers! [;)]

Mine works well around me, some of the speed limits are 25 which is dumb I usually go 35ish like everyone else. The cops in town don't have LIDAR but the State Troopers do, last time I trust my damn radar dectector on the MI highway. I am thinking about getting the k40 though...

Yeah the K40 is an insane unit. I got quoted at 800-1200 depending on which system you get. It'll jam laser, detect all bands of radar, cloak you from direct radar hits, and it can be hidden inside the grill and is installed into the dash so it's not at all obvious.
