I think my next upgrade is going to be a Volant intake. I did read a post somewhere that a better way to go would be just an SVT intake with a K&N drop in filter.

Can anyone validate this?

It's for a ZX3

There's a dyno floating around of a SVT intake vs. a Volant intake that shows the SVT intake having the same powerband as the Volant with a slight edge at the very bottom of the band. I take it with a grain of salt because the Volant would've used the stock Zetec snorkle while the SVT intake would have the larger SVT snorkle, and the smaller snorkle could've potentially starved the Volant. In addition, common wisdom dictates that a cone filter flows better than a panel filter.

I'd like to see the same dyno done using the SVT snorkel on the Volant, but unless the dyno was done with the hood down, I don't think it would even make a difference.
