Is it possible to change your own inner tie rods? I have heard that you need a special tool to do this, But im just curious because the tie rods are 85 bucks and to get the tie rod, have it installed, and have the wheels aligned they want 275 dollars. that seems kinda steep to me 200 dollars for labor? thats f-ing crazy!

The labour you were quoted includes removing the rack and pinion assembly from the car.

Yes there are tools to do the job. The best tool is a pipe wrench. You can do it yourself, it just takes time.

I bought my inner tie rod from napa for around $26. I tried pipe wrenchs and could not get it off. Brought to a local mechanic and he did it for $60.

275 is way over what it should be. I can buy the tie rod, have it installed, and get a four wheel alignment for $100.
