Unless you are talking about a car with rear wheel drive (and most of them are going IRS) most if not all modern cars have Independent Rear Suspensions.

This. Trucks are about the only vehicles that have solid rear axles anymore...even most SUVs now have IRS.

Don't almost all new rides now have IRS?

I thought this was becoming more common to create a better handling ride and smoother ride for all cars.

IRS is nice on a FWD, I cannot stand it on a RWD car. Wheel hop is annoying.

Some cars have Torsion beams, similar to solid axles.
The Corolla and it's variants have one and I think the Fiesta? and a few others

right the new civic type Rs have a torsion bar instead of IRS. the guys on topgear BBC where griping about it
