Yeah I have done that along with just about everyone with a pre 2002.5, I was working with the CNC to make a aluminum one as a project to learn the CNC, but I ran out of time.

Go to the Ford dealership and ask for one, it cost me 25 dollars to replace.

center console...
there is one screw each under each cup holder.
and there is another screw in the middle at the back...
you have to remove the arm rest.
take both side cap from the arm rest off.
then the the back cover piece of the arm rest off.
then 2 more screw.
and the find your way to life the center console up...

Sad to say its a common failure here. Mine is over 120K and is fine, but some folks seem to break "em.

Will the SVT one work here? or not due to the earlier shifter? ( the SVT is a metal base)

mine aint broke what is the need to shift that hard??its also a 00(built in 99 and has 110xxxkm)
For me it wasn't even that I was shifting hard, it just broke one day while I was driving normal, I drive pretty easy with the focus because it has to last me a while. Seems like a safety hazard to me, as I could of gotten stranded if I didnt find a small peice of 2X4 to wedge between the back of the base and the cover.

I belive it comes down to the fact ford failed when they designed this shift base, the engineer responsible needs to go back and take a material science class to learn stress strain curves and fracturing due to fatigue and then needs to take a mechanics of materials class, because its pretty evident he didn't pay attention very well, with that design.

[thumbd] to bad engineering

lol

anyone know the price for the new part?
and how (if i have to) to remove the center console?
well I'm going to be replacing my shifter as mine looks like someone poured acid on the shifter face... your welcome to HAVE my base if your willing to pay the shipping

I just realized you have a MTX base I'm unsure of the ATX will fit (Pm's Mike heheh)
----------

P.S. The base will be detached from the shifter and properly cleaned if you want it if not its gunna end up on the rafts in my garage where I will find it 10 years from now just like the parts from my 1979 Mercury Capri 91 SHO lol

hehehe lets see if you can say you've seen worst

[slap] can't say I didn't try

eh (Shrugs) in that case if that happened to me, I would just grab one from Mike at Hilbish..

Im just gunna detach the base toss it in a random parts bin on the raft and chuck the rest in the trash
(I may try to save the OD button tho may come in handy)

man go return that, and take a 2X4 and make a wedge out of it, then shove it between the center council cover and the back of the shift base, you cant put your shift boot back on but it wont hurt anything, I drove around like that for a couple months.

Then order one from the ford representitive on here (I think its B16SIR).

Nope, Ive done it twice. Then my buddy made a steel bracket to hold the back of the shifter in place and I havent had any problems since. I do have another one sitting around that is in perfect condition b/c ford said that it shouldnt have broke so they gave me one. That and my gpa worked for them for 60 some years and he knows ppl. Oh and you will probably wear your bushing out on the transmission. Mine is worn out, causes me to miss shifts sometimes b/c I have the shifter all the way forward but the bushing has too much play and is still out enough to not engage. Yay grinding gears...

ok so i got it and changed it out. it was way easyer then i thought it would be. the parts guy who was working today hooked it up for $45.

previous owner of the car had changed it before and did a shit job at it. both of the front nuts where finger tight. that probly had a play in why it broke.
shifting feels alot tighter and smoother now[:D]
