I drive a 1999 Hyundai Elantra with 60k miles with no mods accept a set of NGK wires and Denso Irridium plugs and my friend drives a silver SVT Focus with 12k miles with nothing done but a K&N filter in the stock air box. We raced 3 times in a row and i beat him every time with an extra person in the car. We both went all out i dumped clutch at around 4500-5000 rpms, he dumped around the same i dont know for sure what numbers but thats what it sounded like. Can any one tell me what the hell is going on? My friend might just really suck at driving but he dumped high, shifted at redline, and we only raced to around 70mph. What do you guys think. How do you guys drag you focuses? P.S. this is a true story

I am going to compare the Elantra to a Corolla, their numbers look the same. I doubt your wires/plugs add 40-50 hp to be comparable to the SVT. So either he is a horrible driver, or he was playing with you.

He cant be a good driver. A 15 year old girl could beat a car with 30 less horsepower. Werid?

There has to be some other factors involved. An SVT and an Elantra (website says 130ish HP, but doesn't matter) driven by the same person, the SVT will beat it every time. Accroding to a buys guide for compact cars on carsdirect (did a quick google search) the Elantra gets 8.4 seconds 0-60 with a manual tranny. According to multiple sites, the SVT gets 7.5 seconsd 0-60.

8.4 is not faster than 7.5. Numbers don't lie.

So either-
1. He can't drive
2. He was playing with you
3. His car has serious problems
4. You have some other modifications to your car

So which one is it?

I doubt it. Your car is in no way near the performance level of the SVT. And dumping it at 5 grand isnt the best approach unless your purposely trying to just spin the tires. The only way I could see this story being true is if he dumped it from redline and shifted at 3 grand through every gear.

Well i was running 91 octane, im sure the tests were running crap since the owners manual recomends crap and i through away the garbage auto light shit plugs that came with the car it was a stop watch so it prolly was more like 7.5 with possible speddo issues, and human error, but with the same human error my friend with to focus got the same times, also it was dahm cold when i race which can make a difference.

Hate to break it to you but running 91 octane will not cut nearly a second off of your 0-60 times. Also the cold weather has as much of an effect on your car as it would on his.

My family had a rental car Elantra for a few months while my dad waited for his company car to be built at the factory. I think it was a 2002 - it was surprisingly peppy but not SVT peppy. How much does a 99 Elantra with manual trans. weigh?

P.S. - race him past 70 and then see who wins. [:D] Something tells me Hyundai wouldn't allow an Elantra to be capable of reaching speeds near 140. [rolleyes]

Ive gotten my hyundai to 130mph never faster, i know he has the top end on me , but i thought hed smoke me in drag too. I dont think the zero to sixty time of 8.4 is right it cant be because it doesnt feel that slow. I didn't beat him by much if that makes you guys feel any better he was right at my bumper, or 1/2 a car behind. The reason im really asking you guys all this is becasue i dont know if i should tune the car or maybe turbo charge it. If i can beat a stock svt with a stock car then i think its worth putting money into. If anyone lives near 818 with a stock SVT or very near stock SVT id love to race. I dont know how more i can prove this isnt BS than that

You've had an Elantra up to 130?? I'm honestly surprised that Hyundai would have engineered the car in such a way that it is possible to go that fast. Not saying you're full of it, but I never would have guessed a Hyundai compact economy car would be capable of that. Expect many more people to "raise the B.S. flag" on you. There are plenty of skeptics on this forum...

I had a 97 hyundai elantra also with the 1.8 liter, that thing was a dog compared to the new 2 liter it only got up to 107mph and ran a 9+ second to sixty, the gear ratios were different as well. Just curios, how do you guys race you focus in drag, if you went all out, i want to tell my friend and race him again.

And you have driven what other cars to compare your "feeling" of it not being that slow. Hell I thought my focus was pretty quick until my brother let me drive his stang.
