I've heard a whole bunch of chat about the flywheels going bad in the SVTF... How do you tell when you need to take it in for this?

Just wondering if this is justification for bringing it in....

Car used to accelorate to 7200RPM smoothly... Now I have a horrible vibration above 5500RPM's in the area of the shifter... So my guess is it is coming from teh transmission, maybe due to bad flywheel...

Also I have a weird noise at idle which is directly connected to enging speed... Sounds kind of like my guages are ticking? or maybe something is ticking in the transmission area? I can't ear the noise when up by the engine, whats why I';m guessing it's guages inside!? Onyone have trouble with bad guages?

Thanks for the help. Jered

usually a chatter is from it being warped or out of balance...that could a sign, if you have friends that r tech's...have them take some time and check it out, even looking at the surface if its warped theres certainly gonna be heat scores

Well, I drive a ZX3, but have the same issue as you. I think the ticking sound, and vibration may be one of the issues with the focus over the long haul. I hope we don't have transmission issues like Fords in the past (ex: 88-89 auto mustangs). This seems to be a common symptom of peoples' foci in this forum.
OT: my car has the same stalling issues as the SVT, but I've heard nothing of a fix for the ZX3's problem like I have the SVT's reflashes. All Focus models are facing their share of problems for sure.

the sound's from the driver's side of the engine and is not coming from the engine itself. It's what I can figure since there's really no other moving parts over there.

My SVTF is in the shop right now having the flywheel and the gear box replaced. I have 10,000 miles on the car, and both have been noisy since day one. The service manager and I have been talking to the SVT hotline about this issue. The test was to check the noise and note the rpms when the noise begins. I don't remember the exact numbers (rpms), but we noticed the noise never went away, and was constant.

The noise is best described as what a few marbles in a tin can would sound like if shaken. If you have ever heard excessive tramsmission layshaft backlash, well imagine it ten fold! The noise happens when the car is in nuetral with the cluth dis-engaged.

So... Ford is aware of the situation, and I would suspect we will see more and more post about this dual mass flywheel/transmission situation.
Wish me luck. The car is supposed to be done on monday. I'll keep ya'll posted.

The ticking may be the fuel injectors pulsing. I took my car in last year, and they it was "normal". I thought it might be valvetrain noise, but they assured me it wasnt.

If its more of a chatter, that goes away when the clutch is pushed down, it may be a throu bearing or flywheel problem or something. I have this noise, and is pretty loud. I took the car in recently for some other work and the new PCM update, and asked them to check the chatter, and they said is was due to "lose gears in the tranny, its normal for it to make that noise". Hmmmmmm. Usually when I go to the dealer, and tell them of a problem, their immediate reaction is to think I am wrong or making it up, and they try to discredit me. I did not have the chatter when I got the car, and I told them I believed I may have a throwout bearing problem. They said no way, its normal. So if the thing breaks, F 'em. Theyve been forewarned of the problems.

They always pull this shit. Just like the 2000rpm buzz. I told them and told them, "please replace my flex pipe, thats what is buzzing". Even after a road test with a tech, he heard the noise but couldnt figure it out. I said "dude, its the flex pipe". It took me months before I could get it fixed. I had to drive around all summer with my car buzzing like that. Same thing happened before that with the catalytic converter that was buzzing. Jerk-offs.

I had a chattering a chattering noise and took it into my local dealership. They told me it was the fly wheel and they replaced it with a dual mass fly wheel. When I got it back, it still made the noise, just a lil' quieter. So I took it back in and now they are replacing the whole tranny. And I have only had this car about 3 months.

7,000 miles and it's at the dealer today for DSI replacement, new flash, and replacing the flywheel. Anyone have any clue on how long this will take? One day, two?

My SVTF is finally home. They replaced the gearbox and flywheel, and did the YRFO reflash. Wow, what a difference, it's like a whole new car. The transmission shifts fine, and doesn't make that sickening rattling noise. The transmission shifts as smooth as silk, and I don't have to double clutch to downshift anymore.

No more engine surging, and no more hesitation on starts, and the cold start problem is fixxed as well.

I am a happy camper once again. The service dept at Nemer Ford in Queensbury NY did one fantastic job. My car was washed and vacuumed, they put me in a free loaner car, and there were no greasy finger prints on or in the car!!! I am zipping off a Big Thank You note to the GM, the service and parts deptartments.

See, they do do get it right sometimes too!
