how can you tell if it needs to be flushed out? i read that if it is darker in color then it needs to be changed.. what about if you start noticing a noise from the steering wheel when you turn it right or left?

i have a noise comin from my steering wheel it soulds like a rusted spring or maybe squeaking type noise... not too loud but its clearly evident...

what could be the cause?

I work at grease monkey, dark colored fluid is only a sign... Go by mileage, for most vehicles it is recomended every 30k. Changing it can be hard, but we have a machine that does it for us, cleans it out and puts new redish clear fluid in. Gets about 98% of the bad fluid.

For the squeeky noise, thats mostly caused if the fluid is low. I've changed many power steering fluids and I recommend that u dont wait til it gets dark black. Hard to get it clean after that. Go by mileage from manual.

so i noticed my steering getting a little heavier and it was making a little noise when I turned the wheel. Not a loud noise, but one that wasn't there before. So i check my ps fluid and its at the bottom of the min and it looks like black oil [?|] . It smelled faintly of battery acid, so I know the fluid is totally cooked. Do I have any chance of my pump not being fried too? Im going to drain and flush the system the best I can and put new fluid in but Im wondering if I should just get a whole new ps pump if its only gonna last me another few months or something. It hadn't made any noise or anything prior to about 2 days ago.
