im noticing that at low to medium speeds my car i can feel the 1st gear shift more... its not slipping but i can feel a slight jerk..

is this how focuses normally are? i have 2000 focus se with zetec 91k miles. the automatic trans fluid doesnt smell and looks red im not sure how long ago it was changed..

i just wanted to know if this was normal behavior or if i should look into doing a flush... also i may want to look into getting one of those trans additives to throw in there to make it shift smoother.

thanks

Probably normal but I remember thinking that mine was one of the smoothest ATX I had experienced (admittedly not that many in my history.....)

Keep in mind also the shifts are controlled by the ECU so there could be a sensor giving a goofy reading causing rough shifting. It may not be a mechanical issue.

Not so much normal but not unusual. Mine has done it when I'm running the a/c full blast and have my idle set higher than normal.

i just went out and got a transmission fluid additive for smoothing shifting and other things like hesitation.. leaks etc..

it just says to add this to the transmission fluid.. where would i add this under the engine bay - i know this sounds like a noob question but i dont see a cap to unseal for the trans fluid.. only the dipstick... please help clarify..

thanks

I beleive you add the trans fluid though the dip stick tube. You might want to change the fluid since you can't remember when it was changed. Fluid condition not only affects wear of parts but also sensors that monitor things.

ok thanks for the confirmation... should i let the car sit for awhile and check the trans fluid level to make sure i dont overfill it with this additive?

the trans fluid is red and doesnt smell.. doesnt that indicate good trans fluid?

Was your battery disconnected recently? If yes, the transmission may be re-learning its shift behavior, and will do hard shifts for a while. If no, something has changed. It could be the car, it could be your driving behavior. Punching the pedal harder will cause harder shifts. See if you can still get it to shift softly by accelerating very slowly. If you can't, somethign funny might be up.

Careful pouring in the additive, if your fluid level is too high it might make things worse. I'd just leave it alone if I were you. I always felt the shifts were sloppy and jerky, not firm yet still uncomfortable. Check your maintenance schedule for the fluid, I believe it's recommended every 30k miles.

My 07 automatic jerks a little bit sometimes... however I can never feel it downshift... my last Focus did it and so did the two escorts I owned before that and my Dad's taurus... its a Ford thing I believe

i love it when it jerks lol, if i stay easy on the throttle it shifts fairly smooth. but then again if i wanted a car that shifted so i didn't notice, i wouldn't have bought a focus.
