I assume you are using the old method of removing the pan and replacing the filter inside. I just changed mine yesterday and it took exactly what the Chiltons manual said, 3.1 quarts.
Getting the silicone gasket material off the pan was a time-consuming PIA... I much prefer the "old" method of a gasket. At least them you could use gasket remover, nothing takes the silicone off except using a plastic scraper and your fingernails. I probably didn't need to clean it quite that well, but I really hate leaks and redoing work. So I am extremely careful about cleaning mating surfaces.
