You take the headlight out (remove the top screw and the two clips), remove de protection cover behind it and you will se the side light bulb, turn it left or right and it will come out. Although it sounds a lot to do it's a 10 minutes job for both headlights.
Cheers

EDIT: Sorry mate, I tought you owned a MK2 focus, but it shouldn't be much more different. Sorry again

Hi E63M6
I saw this thread last night and couldn't reply with phone.

Have you Xenon or non Xenon lights? there is different ways to remove them.

I have non Xenon, so can access the bulbs from the back of headlight via the engine compartment -there is a clip holding a cover in place - open clip and remove cover. Then disconnect wiring at back of bulb - the lower bulb being your dipped and disconnect the wire clip holding bulbs in place. Remove and replace bulb and reassemble in reverse.
The Xenon requires more work - loke razvanro says above the headlight needs to be taken out.
I have a haynes manual for the 2001-2004 focus here and if you want, I can scan the relevant pages on Monday and either send on to you via email or Pm.
hope this helps :)
