Maybe this is the right spot for this; I could be wrong. I seem to not get the right spot on here for anything so I do apologize lol. Anyhow, I have the '14 Focus SE, without the gear selector (although I wish I had it; is it expensive to have it put in?), but where those two rocker buttons would be I do have a button with like a car going down a hill appearing on my dash. How do you use this feature properly? What about the winter time, is it useful in the winter or is it better to use "low" or what? This will be my first year of driving in the snow so I am a bit worried. Tips? Thank you.

Page 163 of the 2014 owners manual:

D (Drive) with Overdrive Cancel/Grade Assist
Pressing the transmission control
switch on the side of the gearshift
lever activates overdrive cancel and
grade assist.
Overdrive cancel/grade assist
• Overdrive is deactivated.
• The transmission operates in gears one through five.
• The grade assist lamp in the instrument cluster is illuminated.
• Improves driving experience in hilly terrain or mountainous areas by
providing additional grade (engine) braking and extends lower gear
operation on uphill climbs.
• Provides additional engine braking through the automatic transmission
shift strategy which reacts to vehicle inputs (vehicle acceleration,
accelerator pedal, brake pedal and vehicle speed).
• Allows the transmission to select gears that will provide the desired
engine braking based on the vehicle inputs mentioned above. This will
increase engine RPM during engine braking.
Overdrive cancel with grade assist is designed to provide optimal gear
selection in hilly terrain or mountainous areas. It is recommended that
you return to D (Drive) on flat terrain to provide the best fuel economy
and transmission function.
To return to D (Drive), press the transmission control switch again.
• The grade assist lamp in the instrument cluster will not be illuminated.
• The transmission will operate in gears one through six.
Another member has added select shift to a non-select shift model:

When you press the Hil; button, it shifts down one gear for a hill, and only when it detects that you are accelerating down a hill. It doesn't do anything on a level road.
