I need some ideas of what's going on before I take her in. I'd really appreciate y'all's specific help. I have a bottom-of-the-barrel 2001 Focus, AT, about 135K miles on her. This is the second alt I've bought in 5 years.

Here's our story so far:

Stalled after startup and putting her in drive.

Checked connections for frays or corrosion. All fine.

Checked sparked plugs. All fine.

Checked battery and systems. Alt failed.

Replaced with refurbished alt.

Kept new battery bought to get her to shop after complete alt death 2 days after testing battery and alt.

She stalls when put in park or neutral.

Start up fine.

Rough idle sometimes, runs fine.

No other electrical issues. (No dimming, no powering off).

My next step is to take her back to Alt place and have them check the alt they gave me. Is this valid? Or are they going to be insulted/amused.

What else should I check before taking her in for service?

I sincerely appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Hey all,

Check engine light finally came on. Code is P0402 -ECM has detected too much flow on the EGR system.

If you have any other ideas, feel free to toss them out, but I guess I have a place to start. Thanks!

Bad EGR valve sounds like your culprit there. Doesnt hurt to check the PCV valve as well but its probably got nothing to do with it in your case.
