So i changed the egr valve on my focus 1.6tdci along with the tube for heating the air con coolant that was attached to it. all worked fine but when i turned the car over it ran for 5 seconds then shut off. a weird noise then started coming from behind the engine, most likely fuel pump. i disocnnected the fuel lines, turned on the ignition and no fuel rushes out. the cars fuel level was very low that day and i topped it up. could it be dirty fuel or can the pump just randomly die like that. any way to test it...please help.

Check the fuel pump relay. You should hear it when you try to start the engine.
Not sure about the Euro Foci, especially diesels, but also check the fuel pump safety shut-off (here it's on passenger side footwell) to make sure it hasn't been tripped.
